rooney_1643930aWhilst Manchester United’s summer went pretty badly, it could have gone a lot worse. They could have lost Wayne Rooney.

Yes, they’ve started the season poorly, but the English centre-forward has been a bright spark among all the drudgery. Without Wayne Rooney, things would be a lot worse.

The Manchester City defeat was the nadir of David Moyes already disappointing reign. To lose to the noisy neighbours is already tough to take. To lose 4-1 must make Manchester United fans want to bury their head in the sand.

Despite all the speculation regarding Wayne Rooney’s future this summer, it was interesting that he looked like the only player to give a damn throughout the derby. Whilst other players went through the motions and seemed to accept defeat, Rooney worked hard, battled for everything and was rewarded with a late goal.

Rooney may not feel completely at home at Old Trafford any more, but the fact that he’s still capable of producing inspirational performances speaks volumes of the man. He’s a true fighter and he has the quality to back it up.

That’s why I’d like to see David Moyes do everything he can to keep the England International. Manchester United’s future success may rely on it.

United’s chief executive David Gill has already hinted that a deal could be forthcoming: “Without doubt, I’m sure they would look at it. We had an approach to dealing with players’ contracts at Manchester United that’s stood us in good stead for many years and I’m sure that Ed [Woodward, executive vice-chairman] and David [Moyes, the manager] and the owners will continue with that policy.” (Source: The Star)

If this fights off interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, then it’s good news.

I’m also excited to see that there’s been progress with Nemanja Vidic. Whilst he’s had his injury concerns over the years, it looks like he’s now on the mend. David Moyes isn’t unaware of this and looks ready to offer him a new contract:

“Vida’s form would suggest he is well worthy of that [a new deal]. Probably his injuries have been the reason why you might have to look at it.” (Source: The Star)

If Manchester United can tie down Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic to new deals, they’ll have done a great job. Things aren’t going well at the moment, but they’d be considerably worse for United without their star players.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United over Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic new deals?
