Claudio MarchisioAs things currently stand, Manchester United are eighth in the Premier League table after five games. Even granted that David Moyes needs a little time to settle in, it’s a slow start.

Yes, United have had some tough fixtures, but it’s still disappointing to see the likes of Everton and Southampton out ahead of them. It’s a long season, that’s for sure, I just hope this series of games doesn’t cost them the title.

Every point counts and Arsenal are already five points ahead.

I’d put this down to a lack of action in the summer transfer window. Everybody could tell that Manchester United needed to sign a midfielder with a creative spark this summer. Somebody who could drive play forward, deliver killer-balls and feed the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.

Unfortunately, the best David Moyes could do was to bring in Marouane Fellaini. I’m a fan of the big Belgium bruiser, but he’s not the kind of player that United really needed.

Throughout the summer, I was excited to see United get linked to Italian international, Claudio Marchisio. Whilst he’s not your typical play-maker, the Juventus ace has the quality and ability to significantly improve United’s midfield.

He’s both quick on his feet and strong in the tackle. He could be the closest Manchester United will ever get to a replacement for Paul Scholes.

What’s more, the 27-year-old has already admitted that he “would be very proud” if Manchester United were to try and buy him. This makes me wonder why David Moyes didn’t test the waters this summer.

The Mirror does claim that David Moyes is still keeping tabs on Marchisio. Unfortunately, they also suggest that Juve are looking to tie him down with a new contract.

His current deal runs until 2016 and it’s thought that Juventus are looking to offer him a two-year extension. This would likely put an end to Manchester United’s interest in the player.

That’s why it’s important for David Moyes and co. to make a move whilst the iron’s still hot. If Marchisio believes that Manchester United’s interest is genuine, he may not be so keen to sign a new deal.

This, in turn, would make it significantly easier for Manchester United when it comes to negotiations.

One thing’s clear, drastic action is needed. Let’s hope that David Moyes is up for it.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Manchester United go after Claudio Marchisio?
