How on earth is Nicklas Bendtner still an Arsenal player?

Nicklas BendtnerLast Tuesday Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner released a statement that claimed he was ‘very disappointed’ that a move out of Arsenal didn’t materialise over the summer.

You’re not the only one Nick. The great majority of Arsenal fans still can’t wait to see the back of you and were hoping that you’d finally be shipped out this summer.

The Gunners have undergone a massive culling, cutting ties with the likes of Andrey Arshavin, Denilson, Sebastien Squillaci, Gervinho, Johan Djourou Marouane Chamakh and others. Nicklas Bendtner’s name should have been on that list.

Indeed, of all the players listed, it is Bendtner who has the least ambition (barring, perhaps, Andrey Arshavin).

Bendtner was set to move to Crystal Palace on deadline day, but the Gunners vetoed the move after their own attempts to sign Chelsea striker Demba Ba on loan fell through.

Now Arsenal have a player on their hands who has never really been a top goal-scorer and doesn’t really want to be at the club.

Whilst at Arsenal, Bendtner only managed 22 goals in 99 appearances. At Sunderland he managed to grab 8 in 28 appearances and at Juventus last year, he played 9 times without scoring.

He started his career slowly and has produced diminishing returns ever since.

To be fair, Bendtner said all the right things throughout his statement. He was honest about wanting to leave the club, but seems to accept that it wasn’t to be this summer.

Most importantly, he makes it clear he’s not going to shirk his responsibility whilst he’s still here:

“I want to assure all Arsenal fans that I will give everything I have to contribute. Following positive talks with the manager, I am looking forward to working hard to regain full fitness and doing my very best to help the team and the manager fulfil our objectives and ambitions this season.”

Whilst I admire his attitude, I still doubt his ability to contribute over the course of a season. He’s quite clearly doesn’t have the level of quality necessary to play for the Gunners. I just hope he doesn’t become a laughing-stock.

His time at Arsenal has been over for a while and yet he still lingers like an unwelcome smell.

This begs the question: when are Arsenal going to clear the air and send him packing?

What’s your take? Will Nicklas Bendtner have a role to play this season?

Your right fans do say Wenger is great, they are also saying people like yourself are a waste of space either support All that is Arsenal or find something else to amuse yourself with.

While I am critical of some aspects of AW and his overblown role, if you think Bendtner alone is representative of the manager’s capability, you’re a complete pecker.

The only thing we owe our players is support. Nicklas Bendtner might just turn out to become the “STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED” being the “CORNERSTONE”. Lets see what he is capable of whenever he gets his chance but above all lets support whoever plays in our team.

50,000 a week that is the contract the clown Wenger gave him and the lazy bastard is prepared to sit on his arse and collect it

if wenger is bad who is best?

Good chance for him to shine

22 goals in 99 appearances? Where do you get your stats from? He has scored 45 goals in 79 starts and 78 sub appearances. His strike rate based on minutes played is comparable to RvP’s. Most Arsenal supporters would be happy to see him go – because he doesn’t have the character to be a top class footballer not because he doesn’t have the talent.

Probably from wikipedia, same as me, according to that 22 in 79 is his league return, but it doesn’t break it down in terms of starts or minutes played, and yeah a large portion of those appearances will be sub appearances of course and a few were on the wing for experience. Completely agree with the final statement. He has the talent to score plenty at international level but he needs to get his head straight. He’s the sort of player who could turn it all around in the end but then again he could not.

I think we arsenal fans should give Nick another chance at the Emirate maybe he can prove things right.
