Whilst Mesut Ozil was making his debut for the Gunners, Tottenham had a midfield maestro of their own take to the field for the first time.
Last Saturday was the first time Spurs fans were able to see their £11m signing Christian Eriksen take action in a Tottenham kit.
As it happens, it didn’t take too long for the Danish ace to make his mark. The 21-year-old demonstrated his creative flair, by providing a fantastically weighed pass for Gylfi Sigurdsson to finish inside the penalty area.
In truth, Eriksen was fantastic throughout the game. His touches were neat, he passed the ball quickly and he didn’t look at all overawed by the situation.
There’s plenty of creative talent in Tottenham’s midfield, but Christian Eriksen stood out. Nobody expects him to have as big an impact on the Premier League as Mesut Ozil, but he does look set for a big season.
Luka Modric’s absence has left a big hole in this Spurs squad. Christian Eriksen could be about to fill it.
We also know from his time at Ajax that he’s capable of providing a goal-threat. Last season he scored 10 goals. If he can chip in with a few more this year, who knows what Spurs can achieve?
Andre Villas-Boas seems pretty enamored by the youngster: “I’m happy for Christian because it’s always difficult to play your first game in the Premier League. He used all his experience – although he’s so young – to take the team forward and link up the game for us.”
Given his price-tag, Eriksen’s name is sure to come up in discussions regarding ‘signings of the season’. He’s a player that Liverpool were thought to be interested in before Tottenham snapped him up, so we have to praise Andre Villas-Boas for getting in there first.
With Spurs looking to break into the top four and earn Champions League football, Christian Eriksen has a big role to play. If he keeps up this level of performance, then Tottenham may surprise people this year.
What’s your take? How much of an impact will Christian Eriksen have in his first year in English football?
