Could Arsenal’s second Real Madrid skirmish be even more important?

Sami KhediraThis summer Arsene Wenger surprised just about every one by signing one of world football’s very best midfielders, Mesut Ozil. Most pundits had already begun to write Arsenal off this season, but Wenger’s one moment of transfer brilliance seems to have completely turned the table.

There’s now plenty of chatter about Arsenal being title contenders. This may well be  a little premature, but there’s no reason why the Gunners can’t compete for silverware this season, especially if Arsene Wenger continues to show ambition in the January transfer market.

Whilst the Mesut Ozil signing provoked a lot of excitement, I think it’s fair to say that he didn’t really fill a need in Arsenal’s squad. After all, Arsene Wenger can call upon many different, talented, creative midfielders (like, say, Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey). In that regard, the Frenchman is spoiled for choice.

What Arsenal lack, are defenders and strikers. If Wenger can fix this in the January transfer window, who knows what Arsenal can achieve?

Admittedly, Arsenal did re-sign Mathieu Flamini this summer, on a free transfer. The Frenchman looks to be fired up and passionate, but at nearly 30-years-old, probably isn’t a long-term option. Flamini is also somewhat limited in his range of passing and his shooting ability.

This is certainly a position that Arsenal could improve upon. That’s surely why there’s been so much speculation regarding Mesut Ozil’s former Real Madrid team-mate, Sami Khedira.

According to ‘reports’ (via The Metro), the German ace is open to a move to the Emirates. They suggest that Khedira is keen to meet up once more with his international chum, Ozil.

Whilst not quite at Ozil’s level, Khedira would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal, who would further demonstrate the Gunners ambition in the transfer market.

Khedira is a bundle of energy, who covers a lot of ground, works extremely hard and can spray the ball about nicely. He’s also strong in the air and can be effective in and around the penalty area.

The fact that he’s remained a Real Madrid regular, despite all the competition, more or less speaks for itself. He’d be a real asset for Arsenal.

Of course, he won’t come cheap. But with Arsenal’s new-found willingness to spend, who’s to say Arsene Wenger can’t make it happen?

What’s your take? Should the Gunners move in for Sami Khedira?

Ridiculous article without a grain of football knowledge!!

Ozil fills a hole we have had since fabregas left. A pure attacking midfielder that can slice defences apart at will. just look at the sunderland game. That creative spark while it has still been there to some degree has caused a lot of Arsenal attacks to stutter in the final third cause the killer ball has been missing. No doubt you were one of the pundits slamming arsenals lack of killer instinct. Step in Mesut!

Flamini: “Nearly 30” wel he is not 30 thus he would likely have at least 3-4 years left at the top of his game and right now Arteta is the better option of the two and flamini brings much needed rotation…

Flamini also bring depth in defence as he can play both fullback roles. In Central defence we have Per, Kozzer, TV5, Sagna…pretty good really. I admit a promising young defender would be very handy…papadopolous?!

Finally striker. The go to of the anti arsenal football pundit. Right now we have the hottest striker in the EPL. The guy i thinking hurting us worst out of all our injuries right now is Poldolski cause he is a brilliant player and a great back-up for Giroud. Hopefully he comes back and we can get through to January with our current crop of strikers and if wenger finds the right deal then sure go for it but not just signing for the sake of signing as football pundits like yourself think is the only way for a team to be
