CALCIO:COPPA ITALIA;ROMA-FIORENTINAAlready this summer, Andre Villas-Boas has shown a commitment to signing exciting young players. The Portuguese manager clearly has an eye for attacking players and has been making some thrilling decisions as of late in the transfer market. Suffice to say, despite all the hoo-hah surrounding Gareth Bale, Spurs fans still have plenty of reason to be excited about the coming season.

And there could yet be more excitement on the way. If you believe The Star (and why wouldn’t you?), Tottenham are willing ‘to spend big’ on Roma’s highly regarded forward, Eric Lamela. He wouldn’t exactly be a marquee signing, but given his age and his potential, he could well end up being one of the best signings made this summer.

Serie A plays hosts to a lot of exciting young players. Stephan El Shaarawy has started turning heads at AC Milan. Former Manchester United starlet Paul Pogba has been impressive at Juventus. Then there’s Roma’s (now ex-)Roma defender Marquinhos, one of the best young centre-backs in world football.

Right up there with these players is 21-year-old forward Eric Lamela, who established himself as a firm fan favourite at the Stadio Olimpico last season. As you can see from the image above, he has a touch of ‘Gareth Bale’ in him.

Lamela mainly plays out on the wings, but loves to drift in and cause a menace in front of goal. Last season he used his quick feet, power and intelligence to dazzle defenders, get in behind and score 15 goals in 29 appearances. This is an absolutely fantastic return for a young player.

It’s also worth noting that Lamela is more than capable of creating opportunities for his team-mates and delivering a killer-pass. He has an all action attacking style, which makes him very entertaining to watch and a nightmare for defenders to deal with.

As such, it’s great to see Tottenham in the market for the young Argentine. But he wont come cheap. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via The Star), Spurs are ready to made a £30m offer for Lamela.

Roma won’t be looking to sell one of their key players (especially one ear-marked for a big future), so it will take a sum as big as this to persuade them to change their minds.

It’s not clear if this will be enough, but it’s certainly evidence that Spurs are moving in the right direction.

What’s your take? Are Spurs right to chase Eric Lamela? Could they possibly persuade Roma to sell one of their top assets?

ABSOLUTELY!!!! Although I very much doubt that Levy would let AVB and Baldini splash out £30 mil on Lamela I would very much like to see him at N17. Picture a 4-3-3 with the attacking line of Chadli on the left, Bale central, Lamela on the right and Soldado as the striker…. Omg that would be nasty. We would RIP Arsenal apart like nothing. Despite Levy’s previously well documented reluctances with spending big (Even with Spurs having on of the richest owners in Europe) I have an feeling that his just might be the season he opens the coffers big time. When you think abouy it, spendig huge amounts of money NOW on young players around the age of 21-24 makes perfect sense. If we spend a lot now on quality, we would make CL for sure, and wouldnt have to spend almost any money in coming years becaue of oour already super talented and young squad. Not to mention that this year is a CL must if we want Bale to stay. We have the money and now that Levy has found the coach to take us to the top and the opportunity has presented itself in the form of Arsenal not reinforcig and City, United and Chelski having coaching changes, he is going to allow AVB to spend BIG. Forvthese reasons I wouldn’t put it past Levy to sancition a £25-30 million bid for Lamela. If we were to end up buying him our attacking line would be set foryears to come barring.the striker position even if a major injury was to occur. Our attacking midfield would have : Bale, Lamela, Chadli, Lennon, Townsend and Siggurdson. Thats quality depth. Also, the oldest player in our attacking midfield would be Lennon, at 25 years of age which is still relatively young.Themidfield would be set for at least another 4 years MINIMUM. Feeling optimistic for the coming season wth or without Lamela.
