Would this £6m man be Liverpool’s signing of the summer?

Diego CapelBrendan Rodgers seems to have a very clear aim in this summer’s transfer market. He’s been targeting good, if unremarkable players, who are available at a fair price. The kind of signings that will likely be labelled ‘bargains’ should they pay off next season.

Barring Simon Mignolet, who looks like a very smart addition indeed, all of Liverpool’s signings are gambles. Spending a considerable sum on a player like Luis Alberto could come back to bite Brendan on the butt.

Iago Aspas looks like an exciting, passionate talent, but there’s no telling how quickly he’ll adjust to raised standards of the Premier League. Then there’s Kolo Toure, who is now 32-years-old and must be starting to lose his pace.

I’m sure fans would be keen to see their club splash the cash and sign some big names, but that doesn’t seem to be Brendan’s modus operandi this summer. It looks like the gambling is set to continue.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool are mulling over a £6m move for Sporting Lisbon’s highly regarded winger, Diego Capel.

At 25-years-old, Capel has been around for a while now and can call upon bags of experience. Before moving to Lisbon, he made 126 appearances for Sevilla. He’s also featured for the Spanish U16s, U17s, U19s, U20, U21s and U23s. He can also two caps for the full Spanish international side among his achievements.

Back in 2008, when he was just 20-years-old, Capel was linked with a £12.5m move to Spurs. Surprisingly, the deal was turned down and his Premier League move was not forthcoming.

Diego has continued to impress over in Portugal. He’s known for his incisive runs, quick feet and good crossing ability. He’s the kind of player who would fit in very nicely in this Liverpool side and would certainly be a step up on the likes of Stewart Downing.

It’s claimed that Marseille have offered Sporting £3m, which was duly turned down. The Metro suggests that Liverpool are willing to go in big and offer £6m.

That seems like a fair price for a talented winger, who still has three years left on his contract. The player himself must surely be keen for a chance to prove himself in the Premier League with a big club like Liverpool.

So yes, this transfer wouldn’t break the mould that Brendan has already established. It wouldn’t be a marquee signing. But it doesn’t seem to be as much of a bargain as the other Liverpool signings that have already been made this summer. Indeed, if it goes through, it could be the best deal that Rodgers has agreed since joining the club.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Diego Capel plying his trade at Anfield?

  • RoytheRed says:

Liverpool won’t be buying anyone else. FSG can’t sell Suarez as they have to have at least one asset to sell the club to possible suitors, hence no Suarez sale = no cash for new players. Let’s face it Fenway have’nt spent much on players, most of the cash spent has come from sales. That’s why they got a cheap manager.
