Is it time to part ways with this Manchester United mainstay?

Nemanja VidicWords can hardly describe exactly how important Nemanja Vidic has been for Manchester United over the years. The man is a rock in the centre of defence and will surely end his career recognised as one of the most gifted defenders to have ever played the game.

Following a £7m move to United in January 2006, Vidic has played an integral part in the first team alongside his centre-back partner Rio Ferdinand.

Whilst at Manchester United he has helped lead the team to five Premier League titles, three League Cup victories and victory in the UEFA Champions League. Suffice to say, United simply wouldn’t have won all the silverware they have, had they not had Vidic in tow.

The man is a born winner. He’s also picked up his fair share of personal honours. Vidic has been included in four PFA Teams of the Year, and has won the Premier League Player of the Season award twice (once in 2008-09 and again in 2010-11).

It’s no fluke that he’s won all of these awards. He’s committed, strong and entirely dominant in the air. He also reads the game unlike any other. All these qualities combined make him the perfect all-round defender.

Given this background, it was interesting to see The Star claim that Juventus are ready to make a move for the Manchester United mainstay.  The source claims that Juventus have no fear of pursuing big names in world football and aren’t afraid to splash the cash.

They’d certainly have to offer a significant sum of money if they are to tempt David Moyes to sell. Despite the big Serbian’s injury problems (we’ll get to them in a sec!), he’s still the club’s best defender.

Unless he agrees a one year extension on his Manchester United contract, he’ll be a free agent as soon as June 2014. That’s probably why clubs like Juventus are hovering round.

I know most fans won’t like this, but I can’t help but feel that it’s time for United to consider offers for Vidic. At 31-years-old, he’s already in the Autumn of his career and this, combined with his injury problems, may mean there’s not much oil left in the tank.

Vidic has only managed 33 appearances in the last two seasons. The sad truth is that David Moyes may not be able to rely on him next season. His injury problems are constantly ruling him out of content.

So why not sell him whilst they can still get a good price for him and then use the money to bring in somebody new (perhaps Ezequiel Garay?). Wouldn’t that be the best move for the club?

What’s your take? Is it time for Manchester United to part ways with Nemanja Vidic?
