Yohan_Cabaye_2034395c-e1319644280748Having spent the entire summer pursuing Cesc Fabregas, David Moyes and co. finally seem to have learnt their lesson. Here’s hoping that they’re ready to start looking at some more viable options.

Fabregas was never going to leave his boyhood club to join a club he learned to hate during his time in the Premier League. All the time and effort that was put towards making this deal happen was an unfortunate waste.

Isn’t it time that Manchester United started looking a little closer to home? With Premier League action fast approaching, wouldn’t it make sense to pursue players who already have experience playing at this level?

According to The Star, Manchester United are one of the clubs currently circling around Newcastle’s midfield ace, Yohan Cabaye. The other clubs listed are Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham.

Whilst United don’t have the same financial pull as PSG, I’m sure the Red Devils offer more appeal than the Ligue 1 side. The opportunity to compete at the top of the Premier League table may be too good for Cabaye to pass up.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is all-too aware of the fact that Cabaye’s position at St James’ Park is tenuous: “We’ve had that before with Andy Carroll and it was a tricky time to lose Andy when we did.

“We managed to overcome that. But you don’t want to make it a habit.”

Losing Andy didn’t turn out so bad. But losing Cabaye could have a major impact on the Magpies.

There’s a reason why Newcastle are keen to cling onto the Frenchman. He’s one of European football’s best passers, a dab-hand at a set-piece and is adept at buying himself time and space and winning fouls. On his day, he’s capable of dominating opposition midfielders on his own.

United’s interest in Fabregas proves that they are after a creative midfielder. Cabaye can certainly deal with this need. The thought of him linking up with talented strikers like Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie is very appealing.

It’s not clear how much Newcastle would need to be offered to convince them to sell. It would doubtless be less than United were willing to offer for Fabregas and the player himself may be able to make a similar impact.

Whilst Newcastle fans will be disappointed to see him leave, this does seem to be a good move for Manchester United.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be in the market for Yohan Cabaye?
