Could the best transfer be yet to come for Liverpool?

Xabi_AlonsoUnfortunately, the Luis Suarez saga has clouded what has been an interesting transfer window for Liverpool. The meddlesome, overly-talkative (except when he’s required to apologise) Uruguayan has stole the lime-light away from a number of good signings.

I’m not sure Brendan Rodgers knew what he was getting into when he joined the club last summer. The last 12 months have provided ample evidence that this Liverpool squad doesn’t have the depth to compete at the top level. Luckily Brendan appears to be on the case.

Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho joined the club last January and both are set to make a major impact next season. This summer, Brendan has already signed Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet. Each player is sure to play an important role over the course of the next year.

The signings of Alberto and Aspas are particularly intriguing. Both are La Liga players who may not adapt well to the rigours of the Premier League. They are high-risk gambles that could win Rodgers a high-reputation, should they pay off.

The only thing missing is a marquee signing. Despite Brendan Rodger’s best attempts to sign Diego Costa, it doesn’t look like that will happen this summer. But still your frowny-faces – the future’s still bright for Liverpool football club.

According to The Star, Liverpool still hold a hope of signing Real Madrid ace Xabi Alonso on a free transfer when his contract runs down in 2014.

Alonso left Anfield in 2009, on the back of a £30m deal with Madrid. Many fans consider his exit to be be one of the key factors in Liverpool’s recent decline.

Even since leaving, Xabi has spoken in glowing terms about his time at Liverpool and has gone as far as to claim that he is a ‘fan’ of the club. If that’s true, it’s not hard to believe that he may fancy seeing out the remaining years of his career with the Reds.

It’s claimed that Fiorentina are also keeping an eye on Xabi’s situation, hoping to swoop in should the opportunity arise. But if there’s any truth to Liverpool’s interest (and why wouldn’t there be?) the ‘Anfield pull’ should be enough to negate the Serie A club’s interest.

In 2014, Alonso would be 32-years-old. But given his playing style, his technical ability and the ease at which he’s able to pick out a pass, I can’t help but feel that he would have another 3-to-4 influential years left in him.

What’s more, he’d be a free transfer for Liverpool and the club would have very little to lose. Summer 2014 can’t come quickly enough.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool look to re-unite with club legend Xabi Alonso?

Alonso can be a very good signing, but MF is our leaser priority areas & Xabi must be at 100K+ salary. Also, in this preseason, I am really impressed with Allen, he can a long term CM solution for us.

If we have the money, for a 100K/week wage, I would have gone for Willian. BR has already done great job by srecouping around 30m & save 350K+/week salary by off-loading Carroll, Downing, Spearing, Shelvey & Reina.
