Should Liverpool fans get excited about this £13m Bundesliga talent?

Kyriakos PapadopoulosDespite being only 21-years-old, Kyriakos Papadopoulos has already started to garner a massive reputation. The youngster has caught the eye with his remarkable aerial dominance, physical strength and high-pressure pressing game.

He also has a surprising amount of experience. Before his move to Schalke 04, he made his professional debut at just 15-years-old, become Olympiacos’ youngest-ever player in the process. For some years, the defensive prodigy made sporadic appearances in his club’s first teams. Over the last couple of seasons, however, he’s been a regular fixture for Schalke.

Unfortunately, he’s also had to overcome a series of injury problems. Last season, he picked up a long-term knee injury that ruled him out of action for a large swathe of the season.

Still, when he has had an opportunity to feature for the Bundesliga side, his cool head, sense of positioning and strong tackling has impressed.

Along with players like Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Kyriakos is one of the premier young defensive talents in world football. I’m surprised more clubs haven’t been circling round him, threatening to swoop in and pluck him up.

Thankfully, Liverpool are thought to be interested. This is a move that would make a lot of sense. The Reds have just lost club legend Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel also looks to be on the way out. Signing a talented young thing like Papadopoulos to partner Daniel Agger or Kolo Toure could be an important step forward for the club.

Schalke’s General Manager Horst Heidt spoke recently about the player’s current position at his club:

“We have no offer for Papadopoulos. Neither from Liverpool or some other club. On the contrary: we are very happy that ‘Papa’ is making progress and can be back soon, hopefully. We’re planning with him.

If we receive an offer for him, we will come together and talk about that as we do with every player for us. (Source: The Star)

It seems like Schalke are taking a rather pragmatic approach to ‘Papa’. The player is believed to have a £13m price-tag and you can’t help but wonder if a Liverpool bid could persuade the Bundesliga side to sell. Papadopoulos himself must surely be up for a move to a bigger club.

Given his injury record, it would be something of a gamble, but it’s a one that could pay-off hugely.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool in the market for Kyriakos Papadopoulos?

  • Kamster says:

We are talking too much…. We need to have precision and decisiveness in our transfer dealings…. We seem to be spending far to much, thinking and thinking and by then the whole world knows and players are lost to other teams… Action = Results….. We lost Vidic the same way to the Mancs…… and David Villa to Valencia….. Lets get this one wrapped up……

  • thombu piranok franco says:

let swarez go for more than 60M and buy papa, erikson(Bernard),diego costa. we will fight for trophies next season.stiven gerrard God be with u for all time,u will be lvpool manager same time.

  • Nelly says:

He’s been injured for almost a calendar year… Would be ludicrous to spend 13 million on him, he needs to get back playing regular football before a decision like that could be made. It took Lucas a full season to get back up to speed after his similar injury and he was already used to the premier league..

  • Lar says:

the another must sign !!! PLS

  • Sha LFC says:

Still our transfer kitty on the pocket..13M is a real competitive price on the market but question raises does liverpool waiting till he totally recover from injury?? if so its real madness..surely some other big clubs will jump into the action once he recovered..won’t be surprised even spurs sign him ahead of us..

  • geo says:

Stop pratting about and make the offer, if he fails the medical, then he fails. At least make an effort, the man is quality

  • Johnny says:

Rumour has it his fitness may be a stumbling block. He has not kicked a ball since November 2012. LFC want to take him on loan for a season, and if his fitness holds up make the move permanent. Seems the right thing to do, have we not learned our lesson by buying injured players.

  • sayeed says:

Too much talking…typical liverpool..then spurs will sign him..

  • Big Will says:

This guy has an awsome talent, so Ill say: If there is a 50-50 hell be fit we should go for it. He could very well be our next Hypiàe!
