Is this £21.5m ace a good fit for Manchester United?

Ezequiel-GarayThe folks at Manchester United know better than just about anybody that strength in depth matters. By cultivating the strongest squad in the League, time and time again, Sir Alex Ferguson was able to win Championship after Championship. Isn’t that exactly what gave United the edge last season?

With this in mind, it’s surprising to see Manchester United sitting still, whilst the clubs around them strengthen. In particular, Manchester City look like they’ll come back stronger next season. Then there’s Arsenal, who should they get hold of Luis Suarez, will be a force to be reckoned with.

This combined with the fact that it’s David Moyes’ first season at Old Trafford, should give fans plenty of cause for concern. If the former Everton man doesn’t take action soon, he risks getting left behind.

Whilst most of the focus this summer has been on improving United’s midfield (hence interest in Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas), I’d argue that David Moyes also needs to keep a steady eye on his defense.

As much as I hate to say it, I’m just not sure how much mileage is left in Nemanja Vidic’s engine. The man has been a defensive rock for a number of years now, but injury problems may well force him to bow out of the game earlier than he would have liked. He certainly can’t be relied upon to play a full season any longer.

Then there’s Rio Ferdinand, who at 34-years-old, is also heading into the Autumn of an illustrious career.

Whilst United can boast plenty of young defensive talent, I can’t help but feel that another experienced head is needed. As previously noted, a bit of strength in depth never hurts.

This brings me to Ezequiel Garay, a man who has attracted United’s interest throughout the summer. The Star even claim that Garay has been house hunting in the Manchester area and that a deal is expected to go through soon.

However, it’s thought that United have offered just £12.9m upfront – a sum that is significantly below what Benfica are expecting for the player. They’re thought to be holding out for £21.5m.

That’s a big sum, but I’d argue that Garay is worth it. The former Real Madrid man is among the best defenders in Europe and at 26-years-old, is about to enter the best years of his career. The time’s right for United to swoop in and pluck him up.

Whilst it’s claimed Benfica want £21.5m, I wouldn’t be surprised if United were able to meet them somewhere in the middle. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to try any way. Here’s hoping David Moyes pushes on and secures the club’s first major signing of the summer.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United finally secure a deal for this £21.5m talent?
