Have Liverpool already made a bid for this sensational Belgium talent?

|

Toby AlderweireldFor Liverpool fans concerned that their club’s transfer activity was drying up – worry not.

According to The Star, Liverpool has been keeping tabs on an Ajax youngster.

Whilst it’s not Christian Eriksen (who I would argue is the best player at the Dutch club), it is a player who may well have a big future ahead of him.

The player in question is Toby Alderweireld, a 24-year-old centre-back, who also moonlights as a right-back and has been labelled an ‘all-round defender’. That moniker bodes well for the Reds, who look a little short at the back following Jamie Carragher’s retirement.

Given the club’s earlier interest in Henrikh Mkhitaryan, this has proven to be ‘the summer of the spell-check’ for Liverpool fans.

Alderweireld is a product of Ajax’s youth academy and was a main-stay in the club’s midfield last season, making 45 appearances and scoring 4 goals. He stood out thanks to his commanding performances at the back, where he used his height and physicality to good effect.

He’s also quick along the ground, makes good decisions and knows how to distribute the ball from the back. At just 24-years-old, he must surely be among the best young defenders in world football.

This, in combination with his current contract situation (he’s only got a year left on his Ajax contract and doesn’t seem interested in negotiating new terms) has led to interest from clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli and Norwich.

The Star claim that Everton and Liverpool are also circling around the centre-back, ready to pounce. More interesting still, someone’s lodged a bid for the player. According to Ajax’s director of football, Marc Overmars, talks are on-going and things look positive:

“We have received an offer. We wont give any names as we are still in talks. But, just like with Norwich City earlier, I expect we can work out a deal with this club.”

Could it be Liverpool who have launched this bid? I certainly hope so. The Reds could use his versatility at the back and the player himself could see his price-tag rise considerably over the next two-or-three seasons.

Besides, this would be a relatively cheap gamble for Brendan Rodgers to make. Alderweireld wont break the bank (unless competition heats up for the player) but it looks like he’d be a good investment.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool swoop in for Toby Alderweireld?
