Have Arsenal left it too late to sign this £29m ace?

Arda TuranArsene Wenger’s strategy this summer has been to leave things until the very last moment in the transfer window. Unsurprisingly, this approach has had Arsenal fans up in arms, furiously berating the Frenchman and the Gunners’ top brass.

There’s a feeling that after what happened last season and the season before that, that Arsenal fans deserve more. That as a club, the very least Arsenal should be doing is going into a season well prepared.

Unfortunately, the squad that rolled-up at the Emirates on opening day to play Aston Villa looked thin, unmotivated and lacking in confidence. As a result, the Gunners suffered a shocking 3-1 defeat. Hardly the best preparation for a long season is it?

As such, Arsenal fans have every reason to be upset, despite Wenger’s protestations.

Leaving things late has another consequence. Most clubs are active towards the end of the transfer window, so there’s usually a fair amount of competition for talented players.

Take, for instance, The Star’s clam that both Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in bidding for Atletico Madrid ace Arda Turan. Given the Gunners’ current desperation and need, do they really want to enter a bidding war with the Reds?

It all seems emblematic of a lack of foresight and stubborn resistance to adopting new approaches.

The Star have based the story on the following quotes for Turan’s agent, Admet Bulut:

“The club does not want to sell Arda. However, if we were to get an offer equal to his £29m buy-out clause Atletico should listen to such a proposal.

Arsenal and Liverpool? A destination in the Premier League would be to the liking of the player and I can confirm there are clubs interested, like the two mentioned. At the moment there are no concrete offers, only preliminary contacts.”

Turan is a top player, who has earned a big reputation over the last couple of years, but £29m is a huge amount of money.

The problem is that Arsenal have a pressing need to add a talented, exciting player like Turan to their squad. Unfortunately, they’ve left it late and there now appears to be little wiggle room in their attempts to try and sign him.

I’d still like to see them give it a go, but I won’t hold my breathe on this one. I can only hope that the club learns from this and is more pro-active in the future.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal still pull off a deal for Arda Turan?

Arsenal are not remotely interest in signing Turan.
Turkish players never cut it in the Prem.
Sahin was supposedly the best turkish player of his generation – and was rubbish at Liverpool.

  • henry says:

We relly have to get him before is too late

  • Richard says:

Signing a player of the highest quality is what Arsenal need now, late or not! It’s about strength and depth, there is no other team in the top flight of English Football that needs that than the gunners at this moment, go for him, 30million is nothing compared to the money the team has in it’s coffers that lie idle! Sometimes you need to be patient, although I agree that doing business early in the season is what seems the perfect strategy for the team going forward!

I don’t see that one happenin’…the buy out clause is just too much..wenger is adamant to change. Leavin’ transfer deals so late dosen’t show any sign of ambition..no more room for plan B..

    • Ade says:

Arsene wenger as usual sells us the arsenal supporters dreams. It was expected he wouldn’t buy any new signing talk less of one of great potential (world class). We could have easily have gotten Huiguin but as usually we failed. As a result i’m not optimistic about a new signing, if we do sign a marque signing it would be a great shock.

Wenger is surely determined to let arsenal team down before leaving for another club.

  • S j little says:

The Arsenal fans should unite in protest. So we are brainwashed now are we?
Wenger thinks we are all unable to see how he is only interested in keeping the enormous money paid to him for what over 8 years which would have git him the sack anywhere else!

    • Jota P says:

really S j little? stand up and protest what? that we dont bow down and buy players for ridiculous amounts of money like these oil funded clubs. Protest that we have a manager who has kept us in top 4 for 16 fing yrs!! We should protest fans like yourself. go support city or chelsea who can fund their club with oil money, and then you will get your wish on milllions wasted on too much talent. You probably had no clue who santi, or giroud was last summer, and what would you say about them now. Wenger knows what talent is, regardless of their international status. why don’t you shut the fuck up and support your club, and don’t bitch about transfers until Sept. 2nd.

  • Jack Wamba says:

Wenger is a BIG ERECT PENIS! As a LARGE, HAIRY VAGINA, Wenger has virtually achieved his objective – “threaten” to sign “top Quality” players, and issue vague rumblings to deflect scrutiny, basically, wind down the 2013 summer transfer window! Gaaad, who hired this DICK-HEAD to Manage Arsenal FC?!!!

  • Evogor francis says:

Arsenal managemen are the biggest problem the club is having they are more intrested in thier profit than the happiness of thier fan ,i can rightly say thier new names should be Joy killers.
