Could Manchester United still pull off one of the biggest deals of the summer?

Mesut OzilDavid Moyes has taken his fair share of flack for Manchester United’s transfer (in)activity this summer, but you certainly can’t claim that he hasn’t been targeting big names.

United’s two main transfer targets this summer have been Thiago Alcantara (who eventually moved to Bayern Munich) and Cesc Fabregas (who has elected to stay at Barcelona). These are big players with big price-tags.

Going after players of this nature is a difficult business. Deals for big players don’t suddenly materialise and there are always a large number of outside factors to consider. Still, agreeing terms for Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas was always likely to be difficult.

If you believe the papers, Moyes’ ambition in the transfer market is yet to dwindle. According to TalkSPORT, United are in with a good chance of signing Real Madrid ace, Mesut Ozil. This should have fans very excited.

Moyes reminds me of a kid of meagre circumstances, who has suddenly been given free reign of a candy shop. He’s plunging his hand into a number of different dispensers with a sense of giddy abandon. It’ll certainly be interesting to see which one sticks.

Ozil is exactly what Manchester United need at this moment in time. I consider him to be the complete attacking midfielder.

With his quick feet and expert passing ability, he’s been compared to Zinedine Zidane on a number of different occasions. The ease and speed at which he’s able to find a killer pass and undo defenses can be quite startling. I think it’s fair to say that Madrid value him highly.

During his first three years at the Bernabeu, Ozil made 156 appearances. This is no small feat. There’s an incredible amount of competition at Madrid, but the German midfielder has risen above the masses and is now a nailed on starter.

As such, Carlo Ancelotti wont let him go on the cheap. It would take an audacious bid on the part of Manchester United to make something happen.

But given the inactivity elsewhere, perhaps United can afford to do this. Signing Ozil would signal United’s intent this season. It would underline the fact that David Moyes has the strongest squad in the Premier League. It could even secure them the title.

With that in mind, I’d say he’s worth pursuing.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United go in strong for Mesut Ozil?
