Could this La Liga star be the last piece of Manchester United’s jigsaw puzzle?

Luka ModricManchester United fans will still be bathing in the warmth of a comprehensive victory over Swansea City, but there’s still some business to be done this summer.

Thanks to two goals a piece from both Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck (who has already doubled his goal-scoring record from last year), United were able to see off the Swans in a 4-1 victory. It was a top performance that will hopefully put to bed any concerns that David Moyes may not be up to the job.

Still, I hope the victory won’t stop Manchester United taking action in the transfer window. David Moyes has been on the hunt for a creative midfielder, pursuing Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas and now seems to have lost out on them both.

Coming off the back of a game where his team created four goals, Moyes may well decide to keep the purse strings tied this summer.

Let’s hope that’s not the case. Whilst signing Cesc Fabregas now looks impossible, there are still plenty of exciting players out there. Take, for instance, Luka Modric, who The Mirror claim wants ‘to become Manchester United’s star summer signing’.

They also suggest that Spurs are keen to re-sign the Croatian, but that the 27-year-old isn’t all that interested. It seems he has the taste for big clubs now and isn’t willing to return to his old club. This would put United in pole position, if they’re willing to make a bid for the crafty midfielder.

Much has been made of Modric’s failure to adapt to La Liga. When he moved to Real Madrid his reputation was impossibly high. A few poor performances and he’s come crashing back down to earth.

But the truth is that it’s difficult for even the most talented players to make it at the Bernabeu. It’s takes a certain mind-set to deal with all the competition and politics that comes with being a Real Madrid player.

It may also be suggested that Luka Modric is simply better suited to Premier League football. Maybe there’s something about his playing style that’s better suited to the tempo of English football?

Regardless, he’s a player I’d love to see back in the Premier League, splitting defenses and causing trouble. He certainly has the quality to improve this Manchester United side, so let’s hope he’s given a chance.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United go in for this La Liga reject?
