Would this be a good start to Arsenal’s summer spending?

Julio CesarWhilst it’s still early in the summer, Arsenal fan’s frustrations over their club’s lack of spending is understandable.

The Gunners were severely under par last season and didn’t really come close to winning anything. The best they could do was yet another top four finish. But surely Arsene Wenger can do better than that?

Arsenal fans may well be looking at the likes of Liverpool and wondering: why can’t we get our signings done nice and early, like them lucky so-and-sos?

We can only hope that Wenger is biding his time, waiting to bring in some big names.

Luckily, according to The Daily Mail, the signing of QPR’s Julio Cesar isn’t far away.

The Brazilian keeper has been a long-term Arsenal target, who have struggled to find a safe pair of hands since Jens Lehmann left the club.

It’s thought that Arsenal have already met with Cesar’s representatives and that negotiations have already begun. If there’s any truth to these claims, then I would argue that the Gunners have taken a big step forward.

Moreover, they’ve made a great start to their summer spending (surely more signings will follow?).

Arsene Wenger has relied on unproven goalkeeping talents for the best part of the last half-decade. Arsenal fans have been forced to put up with a lot of dross in recent times. The names Manuel Almunia, Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone should be enough to send a shiver down any fan’s spine.

Even Wojciech Szczesny, Arsenal’s goalkeeping prodigy, has struggled to make his mark. He has been earmarked as the Gunners’ long-term number one, but can’t seem to put a string of games together without making a costly mistake. He’s rash, impetuous and a little too confident for his own good.

I would argue that the best thing about the signing of Cesar, would be the Brazilian’s ability to play mentor to young Szczesny. Cesar is now 33-years-old. He may only have one more big contract left in him. But he has a wealth of experience to offer and a pair of safe hands. He certainly has plenty to teach Arsenal’s current crop of keepers.

He could be an equally important signing for Arsenal, as the signing of Edwin van der Sar was for Manchester United back in 2005.

Arsenal are building from the back this summer and that can only be a good thing. Let’s just hope that there’s more to come!

What’s your take? Is Julio Cesar a good start to Arsenal’s summer spending?
