Why this £27m ace is still the right man for Arsenal:

Stevan JoveticRemember Stevan Jovetic? He was Arsenal’s big transfer target before Gonzalo Higuain came along.

Earlier this summer, the papers and various other sources were awash with stories that linked the Montenegrin with a move to the Emirates.

For all we know, all these stories were nonsense. In the end, nothing happened and Jovetic’s name began to enter the conversation less and less.

We can only guess at what’s happened, but it looks like Arsenal’s interest cooled and they began to look at different targets. Perhaps another party joined the negotiations and the Gunners didn’t want to battle it out? Perhaps the player’s club, Fiorentina, were holding out for too much money? Perhaps Arsene Wenger simply views Higuain (or Luis Suarez) as a better target.

Whilst any potential deal looks to be dead, The Sun are still carrying the card for a potential Arsenal-Jovetic link up. According to the red-top, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and yes, Arsenal are all keeping tabs on the fleet-footed forward.

If any of these clubs are to win his signature, however, they may well have to meet his release clause, which is a hefty £27m. He’s also believed to be holding out for £120k-a-week. This is a big ask for a player with limited experience at the top level (could this explain why a move to the Emirates never materialised?).

His price-tag and wages combine to make him a very expensive player. I’m not sure Liverpool can afford to splash the cash on someone this costly. City and Chelsea may have their eyes on more established names this summer.

This may leave the door open for Arsenal, if they’re willing to splash the cash. He’d be a massive investment, that’s for sure, but the player has the quality to back this up. Check out this quote from a source close to the player:

“Of the top players in Europe, Stevan is the best value striker on the market right now.”

This is a big claim and I’m not sure it’s true (Atletico Madrid paid only £4.4m for Barcelona’s David Villa this summer). But I hear what he’s saying. Jovetic is a fantastic talent. He has some of the quickest feet in world football, he’s smart, he’s crafty and he has an eye for goal.

His technical ability means he’d fit in well at Arsenal. Indeed, this signing could catapult the club back up to the top levels of the game. It could be what the Gunners need to get them challenging for silverware again.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal re-ignite their interest in Stevan Jovetic?
