Can Arsenal really pull off this audacious signing?

Wayne RooneyArsenal fans may well be looking at the activity of other clubs in the transfer market and wondering: when’s our turn?

After all, the Gunners were well under-par last season. A good run towards the end of the year shouldn’t distract from an otherwise depressing campaign.

Arsene Wenger has a reputation to maintain. Arsenal fans are now used to competing for trophies and are fed up of fighting for fourth place. Yet, silverware has never seemed so far away.

The main problem lies in the Gunners’ attack. It’s not surprising that Arsenal have struggled following the sale of their captain, Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman is one of the world’s best forwards and a recruit like Olivier Giroud can’t really be expected to step into his shoes.

Giroud is sluggish, has no technical ability and can’t hold the ball up well. Sure he can win the ball in the air, but he doesn’t seem capable of directing it into the feet of a team-mate. Then there’s his finishing ability – which I’d argue leaves something to be desired, despite his tally this season.

If Arsenal are to improve and start challenging for silverware, they’ll need to recruit another forward. Somebody better than Giroud. This will mean getting active in the transfer market.

This brings me to the Daily Star‘s claim that Arsenal have already put a package together that they think will tempt Wayne Rooney to leave Manchester United and move to London. Best of all, the Star claim that an Arsenal deal for the English centre-forward is not reliant on what happens with Gonzalo Higuain.

Wouldn’t it be something if Arsenal ended up two world-class strikers this summer? It would certainly put the Gunners in a strong position for the coming season.

They’d need to pay Rooney more than £200,000-a-week, but may well have the funds to do this. They secured some fantastic commercial deals this year and have been clearing the wage-bill of deadwood (goodbye to the likes of Andrei Arshavin, Denilson, Sebastien Squillaci, etc).

And I’d argue that Rooney would provide value for money. He works hard, loves to run with the ball and has confidence in front of goal. In many ways, he’s a complete striker.

It’s been strange to see him get sidelined at Old Trafford. Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger is ready to rectify the situation and make him a Gunner.

What’s your take? Could Arsenal really sign Wayne Rooney this summer?

Typical whinging supporter. Giroud had a good first season. His technique is good and he created a lot….check the stats….This is coming from a season ticket holder not an armchair supporter

we don’t want that scrub Rooney and his high wages. he’s quit on United twice so what happens when he’s not happy with us? get higgy a dm, keeper (ceasar) and a backup cb and we’ll compete

Your right that we need a world class striker and higauin would be exactly that if we get him? But Rooney at 200 a week?? Higauin has proven to be a great striker consistently where as Rooney can be patchy and always prone to the odd red card! And Giroud for a first season has done great even Persie didn’t score that many in his first season! A decent partner to share the goals and I think you’ll see a much improved Giroud on the back of a good last season

  • GAB says:

HIS FIGHTER BUT DISPLINE TO REFEREE, ITHNK IF RONEY WILL BE AFC PLAYER COULD BE 6 RED CARD PER YEAR .
