Are Arsene Wenger’s short-comings being laid bare this summer?

Arsene WengerArsenal fans are used to the infamous quotes that Arsene Wenger gives every year in interviews. Often, we find his comments amusing, we especially like the way he can wind up other people with the things he says. But, when it is the fans on the receiving end of another one of his delusional speeches, you have to consider whether he has lost all consideration for the people that support the team?

Gooners are used to frustrating summers, we’ve spent the last 4 watching our best talent being sold from under our feet and replaced with players of a diminished ability. But, this summer was meant to be different. The last few months of the season were full of bragging by Wenger and Ivan Gazidis of the funds we had to spend and there was insistence that there would be additions to the team.

So, why are we sitting here approaching August with a few young ones banked in the future player fund, no new first team players and Wenger offering the same old sound-bites? You know – the ones he gives every year, saying that he is ‘no closer to signing anyone’ and ’the team can compete for the title with or without new signings’.

We have been linked to many players throughout the summer and there have been so many ‘signings’ and ‘medicals’. I’m sure Diaby has made great friends with Higuain and Jovetic during the summer, whilst also renewing his friendship with Cesc.

But, the pursuit of Suarez is the strangest attempt I have ever seen from Wenger, mainly because of his lack of man management skills. If he can’t handle the likes of Alex Song, Andrey Arshavin and Nicklas Bendtner, who are angels in comparison, how does he ever expect to coach the most poorly behaved player in the Premiership?

Bad behaviour aside, Suarez is a great player and in terms of talent he is better than anything we have. There is no denying that, but he is a huge risk. Besides, I just don’t see Liverpool selling to us when they know that he could make all the difference to where both teams will finish in the Premiership next year.

Suarez has indicated that he despises the English press and wants to move away from England altogether and all these factors point to him either staying at Anfield or going Real Madrid. I think Wenger knows this and has used this situation to his advantage by attempting to appease some fans by making a bid that they won’t follow through.

Wenger is currently standing in a sweetshop full of quality candy, but he seems to be going for the penny sweets and save the rest of the money for the piggy bank at home!

I think there are many fans who are growing tired of his nonsense excuses and justification all the time. How can we believe this man, when all he does is insist a team who scraped 4th last season will finish above all of those teams around us who are strengthening every week?

He is either an extreme optimist bordering on delusion, or he is desperately trying to not to expose himself as the tactically inept and weak manager he has become. Either way, his shortcomings will be laid bare for us all to see this season should we sign no-one.

I know Wenger’s fans will still describe him as the greatest manager in the world, but that is simply not true. I agree  that what he achieved at Arsenal a few years back was amazing, but I’m starting to think that was the team and the people he had behind him. If he was the greatest manager in the world, he’d be able to coach ANY team to victory and he has failed to do that.

We are 20 days away from starting the new Premiership season and 36 days away from the end of the transfer window and I foresee another year where we will have to fight another season out. I honestly can’t see Wenger keeping his job much longer without new squad members. I for one will be taking an ‘I’ll spend when you do stance’.

Wenger will be judged by responsible people not juveniles

    • Go FC Arsenal says:

Arsenal lost players who wanted to leave and the club should allow them to go if unhappy. That is not Wengers fault necessarily. What is interesting is that all who requested out have struggled for playing time and are not as prominent as when the were Gunners. Lets see how Van P turns out.

As for transfer possibilities one also has to be careful not overpay as if it doesn’t work out you can lose big and never realize that over investment.

      Just some thoughts.

Seriously i’d lost every faith & trust in Wenger…no one could imagine how much i detest him, stingy, selfish & STUPID

  • Greeny says:

The Worst thing that happened was finishing 4th last season making wenger think this team is good enough this season not a hope of getting in top 3 this season 4 or 5 players short of winning anything 7 players got rid of 1 19 yr old nobodies heard of in it doesn’t bode well .The emeriates cup this wknd just b great if Higuiun scores for Napoli ,personally think if wenger doesn’t buy 2 or 3 world class players the crowd will turn & he’s a dead man walking !!!

I think its high time we fans start boycotting the matches!what’s the point of giving myself high blood pressure, year in year out, when its obvious money won’t be spent on good players. We are being treated as kids in a candy shop!we’ve been linked with so many players, from jovetic to now Suarez.I bet when Suarez deal falls flat,I won’t be surprised we will get linked with Alan Sheared,Gazza or pele.
I suggest we hit where it hurts most “their pockets”.
Enough is Enough! As for me I’ve decided not to renew my season ticket. It takes 2 to play the game!

i have always known that wenger will not buy any player of note. He always believes in what he has at present which do not always work out. Diaby was relied upon to add strength to the midfield but couldn’t finish the season. That’s why adding quality players..,strengthening the squad is very necessary. What it means is that our trophy cabinet will continue to experience huge drought until another coach who understands what winning trophies is about takes over the club. Am of the opinion that wenger has tried in his glory days..i think it’s time he quits . what A.F.C needs now is a coach with a fresh ideas and techniques.

  • hammy says:

You are all repeating my outlook…..Wenger makes out he is trying to buy a world class man, knowing that he will not be buying him, but making out he is trying…he thinks he can bring players on to win trophies..or does he? he has not been able to do it for years now…but who will force him to buy? doesnt everybody insist hes the best….I dont think so.. just a man who is full of himself..does he care about what others think..NO

  • princeedoseghe says:

    SACK wendger and gazidis !

  • Morrygooner says:

Same good for nothing Wenger. He will not buy any player come the 1st of Sept.

  • Robbie mc says:

Well here we go again same stories all hype about who is on our radar and how much money we have to spend and once again we will end up with no one HOW MANY more transfer windows will we have to sit and see over priced under rated players come in to our club I’m personally very angry and disappointed

  • Rana says:

Wenger has become senile. After lying for spending big and letting Higuiun, and Jovetic slip by, and then making all his eggs in the basket of Suarez he has become a laughing stock of the football world. I’d sure like too see the back of him once and for all.

  • Tom says:

The Suarez bid is clearly an act of desperation at a big name signing , for all the reasons you just named in your article. I don’t thing it’s a publicity stunt or attempt to appease the Disgruntled fraction of the fan base , as Wenger has too much contempt for an average supporter to alter his ways for the sake of pleasing them. I believe in his view , 40 pillion plus 1 pound should’ve been enough for Liverpool to consider letting the want away striker go, because that’s what Wenger would’ve done( e. g. Fabregas or Song transfers). Liverpool stood firm(good for them ), and that’s the end of this transfer saga. The most disappointing aspect of this transfer window fiasco is the fact that all three title contenders are in a transition of sorts with the managerial changes and this was (still is) Wenger golden opportunity to make up some ground and close the gap, which by the virtue of new systems being implemented at Chelsea and both Manchester clubs, might be actually smaller than most people think. With the core of the team in tact and a couple of world class players added Arsenal would’ve been positioned beautifully to challenge next season. A big opportunity lost.
