Kevin StrootmanIt’s funny how quickly things change in football. Not so long ago, PSV’s talented midfielder Kevin Strootman was linked to a £17m move to Manchester United.

A few months have passed and precious little has changed, yet the Dutch ace has found his price-tag slashed significantly. David Moyes could be on the verge of a real bargain.

According to The Star, Kevin Strootman will be Manchester United’s first major signing of the summer and he’ll cost just £10m. That’s a £7m reduction in the space of 2-3 months.

The Star also claims that David Moyes has previously requested a ‘detailed’ scouting report on the 23-year-old and has now seen enough to encourage him to make a move.

But if Strootman is to leave the Eredivisie to join Manchester United, will fans have reason to rejoice? My feeling is that the Dutchman would fit neatly into David Moyes’ team.

Much has been made of the fact that Paul Scholes has now retired. Whilst it may be noted that he was slowly being phased out last season any way, I think it’s necessary to find somebody who can fill his boots. Michael Carrick may be the man to do it, but I feel that Kevin Strootman is a more suitable candidate.

Yes, Strootman is best known for his range of passes, quick feet and technical football. But he’s also a hard-worker who isn’t afraid to get stuck in when necessary.

In this respect, he’s more like Scholes than Carrick, who doesn’t really share this competitive edge (despite being among the best players in the Premier League).

I’m surprised that Strootman is available for as little as £10m. Indeed, this may be a little too good to be true. The 23-year-old, who already has 18 caps at International level, has bags of potential.

He’s already proved over the last couple of seasons that he’s good enough to start moving up the levels and competing at the top.

He can’t be content finishing a runner up in the Eredivisie. Surely he’d rather be competing for the title with Manchester United? If Moyes comes knocking, I’m sure he’ll jump at the opportunity. And surely Moyes would be mad not to?

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be in the market for Kevin Strootman?
