Why it’s time for Liverpool to cut ties with these two talents:

Jonjo ShelveyLast season brought home a whole series of home truths for Liverpool fans. Whilst many young talents were given an opportunity to shine, others seemed to faulter under the limelight. It may end up being viewed as a transitional season. One where Brendan Rodgers learned an awful lot about his squad. One where certain players built or derailed their future at the club.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Brendan Rodgers is considering parting company with Liverpool ‘starlets’ (I use that term loosely), Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing.

Both players were at one stage considered to be top young talents. At one stage or another, I’m sure we’ve all tipped them to have a ‘big future’, or rolled out guff like, ‘we’ll build a team around them’. We may not quite be eating our words just yet, but I think we’ve just about set the table, said grace and reached for our knives and forks.

The stock of both players have never been lower. This, combined with Brendan Rodger’s in-progress summer-spending-spree, may force this pairing out of the club. And at this stage, would any of us be sad to see them go?

It’s thought that Shelvey will be allowed to leave if an offer around the £7m mark comes in. This would be a fantastic price for a player who has promised much, but offered little. The 21-year-old midfielder is a tenacious, out-spoken talent but he doesn’t seem effective in high-pressure situations. I think he may need to take a step down before he’s ready to make the step up again.

Spearing spent last season on loan with Bolton, but isn’t that much further along his development line than when he left. I just don’t think he has the quality to make it at an ambitious club like Liverpool. Hull City are thought to be interested and I would argue that would be a good move for the player.

It’s thought Liverpool would get around £3m for his sale. That means the club would earn £10m for the sale of both Spearing and Shelvey. That’s pretty good money for two players who have failed to make their mark.

And if it bank-rolls Brendan’s spending this summer, then all-the-better. Let’s hope the club keeps moving forward.

What’s your take? Is it time for Liverpool to cut ties with Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing?

Whilst I’d be happy to see spearing go shelvey is a top young player with bags of potential. The way he moves the ball around the pitch is phenomenal and whilst he lacks the work rate of Jordan Henderson he’s a more naturally gifted player and IMO has a greater chance of being Gerard’s successor. Realistically, especially if we sign mhikataryan his playing time is going to be limited this year, and this a loan spell to a premier league club would be a good idea, but selling such a bright prospect would be foolish in the extreme

    Spearing and Shelvey

I would keep Shelvey as he kept us in Europa League last year with his goals, with regards to Spearing he is no good for a team like Liverpool would be best suited for a team like Hull or Bolton.

OK and the total price you suggest sounds fair!

  • Tony Davies says:

Ye I think we should cash in on the 2 of them, got enough in midfield to sell em both on and invest in other players.

  • Mikey says:

if that’s we the case we have enough in midfield why is he trying to sign Henrikh Mkhitayan who is a attacking midfielder ???

  • dood says:

Yeah, Spearing’s stock has never been lower having being voted Bolton’s player of the year…

  • Martin Rayner says:

Don’t sell them! Give them away,

And downing, these are not premiership players,

    League one maybe!

  • DON says:

Shelvey will always strugle at liverpool as long as they have unimaginative lumps like Lucas asn Henderson playing behing him. KEEP Shelvey and sell those two and liverpool’s fortunes will change for the better. Anyone who has watched Shelvey closely will tell you he finds pockets of space other players don’t but never receives the pass because their isn’t enough quality behind him.

  • Bill says:

Spearing should be sold for definite. If a really good offer comes in for Shelvey take it or send him out on loan to a lower division and hopefully he’ll get some of his over the top aggression knocked out of him, we don’t want to lose all his aggression though.

  • cal says:

two good players but to step up to the next level we need better imo. Maybe by selling these players plus one or two more we can go out and buy top quality players to replace them

  • Rich says:

“if that’s we the case we have enough in midfield why is he trying to sign Henrikh Mkhitayan who is a attacking midfielder ???”

There’s a world of difference between Shelvey and Mkhitayan. Several top teams are interested in Mkhitayan, I can’t think of one linked to Shelvey.

    • Mikey says:

i know they are a different style of midfielders, but I would keep Shelvey and sell Spearing as Shelvey is learning all the time.

  • stevie says:

If we get 10 million for these 2 jokers the trades description will be on us.

  • Dean jones says:

If we can get £10 million it should be done ASAP.Because both are SHITE

  • kihenja says:

i think it should be done as early as now so that the 10m can be used to buy wanyama rather than selling hernderson. he has started picking up and ifeel he should be given a season or two to prove his worth.mikh should not be a big bother.infact the 25m should bring in an experienced defender and another stiker.

  • Chalmers says:

Have serious doubt about selling Shelvey. Once he sorts out his shot accuracy he will be a force to deal with in the future. Spearing I can see going out as he really does not cut it at this level.

  • yemi says:

shelvey is a young lad wit lots of potential,he shud only be sold if lfc is sure of buying henrick mkhintaryan, spearing and downing bye bye to them, offload;.

  • tony says:

both players are good, but selling shelvey is not really a good idea…

  • Dan says:

Both are not good enough for LFC. I like them both for the effort they put in but neither can cut it at a high level. Shelvey is a loose cannon always gets booked and has seen red a few times now. He just doesn’t have the technical ability that some of the others have. Half his shots on goal are way off, okay this can improve with time but technical ability will not. His stats are 1 one goal every 917 minutes, 11% successful crosses, 55% shot accuracy, 4% conversion rat. His stats are worst than any midfielder in he team if I am not wrong.
