Wayne Rooney’s 180: is there still a place for him at Manchester United?

Wayne RooneyThe Manchester United-Wayne Rooney transfer saga has already enjoyed its fair share of dizzying ups and downs. Trying to keep track of Rooney’s motivations, desires and decision-making processes, is like to trying to predict what the next sentence that rolls out of Joe Kinnear’s mouth will be. It defies all logic.

Why would you want to leave the Premier League champions? Why would you want to leave any job where you’re getting paid £250,000-a-week? Wouldn’t any other club (except, perhaps, Barcelona?) be a step down for Wayne? The whole affair hasn’t made a jot of sense.

Moreover, you can’t blame Manchester United fans for getting thoroughly ticked off. This isn’t the first time that Rooney’s pulled this stunt. The English centre-forward has a serious case of the fidgets: he’s completely unable to sit still for too long.

Towards the end of last season, we started to hear that Wayne was considering his future at Old Trafford. It was even thought at the time that he’d handed in a transfer request.

These reports now seem to have been debunked. What’s more, The Mirror claim that Rooney’s undergone a complete reversal. When David Moyes and Rooney return from holiday, they will have a sit-down to discuss the player’s future. It’s thought that Wayne will tell the new United boss that he wants to stay with the club.

Perhaps he’s just sat down to think about it for 5 minutes and realised that he’d be foolish to leave the club that has stuck by him for so long?

Whether or not Rooney’s message to United has been misunderstood, or misinterpreted, now is the perfect time to consider his future. Rooney is now 27-years-old and his re-sell value will begin to drop on a yearly basis. It’s also worth bearing in mind that taking him off the wage-bill would free up some significant funds for Manchester United.

His sale could finance a move for long-term United target Robert Lewandowski (who is just 24-years-old). I’d argue that would be trading up.

Wayne started this. It’s now up to Manchester United and David Moyes to resolve the situation such that they come out on top.

He’s a good player, but there are plenty of other fish in the sea. Maybe Rooney himself has finally come to this realisation?

What’s your take? What should Manchester United do with Wayne Rooney?
