Is Gareth Bale really worth £85m?

Tottenham's Gareth Bale will face Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the Champion's LeagueThe aim of this article is to settle a long-standing debate among Tottenham fans. By the time we reach the conclusion, we’ll have determined exactly how much Gareth Bale is worth to Spurs and the price at which they should be willing to let go of their Welsh wizard. Just kidding.

There are just too many things to consider and the consequences of his sale are difficult to judge. Would it spark Tottenham’s decline, or would the money his sale brings in allow Spurs to compete for bigger and better players and build an even more competitive squad? It’s difficult to say.

How do you go about putting a price on your most important player? It’s a fools errand.

Still, I sympathise a little with Cesc Fabregas, who was recently asked about Bale’s ever-growing price-tag: “For me, it seems foolish to pay 100 million euros for Gareth Bale. I don’t know how any club could spend that amount of money in these circumstances.” (Source: The Mirror)

Whilst Fabregas is a Barca boy (and thus has a vested interest), it’s difficult to disagree with him. 100m euros (£85m) is a crazy money. Bale is good, but he’s not that good. If he was brought in for that price, he’d break the world transfer record.

But there’s no getting round the fact that crazy-stupid money will have to be spent if anybody is to persuade Tottenham to sell. He was the Premier League’s stand-out player last season and at his age, there’s certainly a lot more to come.

He proved his worth on multiple occasions last year. I lost count of the number of times that he saved Tottenham’s hide. Think of it this way: if Bale stays at White Hart Lane and delivers Champions League football for the club for the next two-or-three seasons, Spurs will consider themselves right in having turned down the advances of Real Madrid. The money earned for competing in Europe would provide Spurs with the financial back-bone to build a squad that can win silverware.

Equally, however, Andre Villas-Boas and co. need to consider Bale’s contract. Though he’s tied down until at least 2016, by next summer he’ll have just two years left on his deal. Clubs like Real Madrid will be able to use this to their advantage and look to get Bale for below his market-value.

Bale will never be worth more than he is this summer. With that in mind, if Real are really willing to offer £85m for Bale, Spurs should sell. Fabregas is right: it’s crazy money, but why should Tottenham turn it down?

What’s your take? How much do you think Bale is worth?

Of course not. But then… Is James Rodriguez worth 38? More like 20.
Nowadays clubs pay too much money for players and in this cirumstances Bale is worth even 100.

Any player is worth what another club will pay for him, simple as that. 85 mill could buy us an entire front three – pick your own from the recent rumours – Benteke, Martinez, Damiao, Villa, Soldado, Hulk – that would be scary!

Add to that Paulinho paid for from existing resources and player sales to finance a left back…. that’s a silverware side.

depends from what perspective you’re looking at….other teams might think that Levy is over-pricing him, but I say that from Spurs’ perspective he’s worth every penny of the 85m, and even more than that….he’s won Spurs much more than that in Merch, end of season prize money and Brand Growth & Goodwill in the past 12months! I don’t care that he won’t be the main man in other teams…coz he is for Spurs, and that’s why hes priceless!!

  • SP says:

    Yes.
    Probably more.
Given his age, the potential is there for improvement.
Then there is the amount he will generate through marketing.
The only reason anyone is even questioning it is because he doesn’t already play for any of the more wealthy clubs.
