Could this be the most important signing of Arsenal’s summer?

Gonzalo HiguainAll Arsenal fans wanted when Robin Van Persie left the club, was a proper replacement. Not Olivier Giroud, a Ligue 1 lump who blows hot and cold. Not Theo Walcott, who isn’t best suited for a centre-forward role, despite his protestations. And not Lukas Podolski, who is better suited out on the left wing.

Certainly not Gervinho. No, no, no. No way.

It shouldn’t have taken the Gunners a year to bring in a player worthy of replacing the Dutchman. But finally, it looks as though Arsenal are in a position to fully replace their ex-Captain.

According to The Mail, Arsenal are close to signing Gonzalo Higuain for a £22m fee. The Real Madrid veteran (he’s been there for 7 seasons, despite being just 25-years-old) is ready to move on and the Emirates could be his next destination.

It’s even claimed that Higuain has ‘privately agreed’ to move to Arsenal this season. This, I think, should provide fans will plenty of cause for celebration.

Higuain is the real deal. In 266 games for Real Madrid, he has scored 122 goals. He’s also chipped in with 46 assists. If he’s on the pitch, he tends to affect the game one way or another. Besides, you don’t survive for too long at the Bernabeu unless you have something to offer.

The Argentine forward is extremely mobile and positions himself well. He has an excellent touch and is able to hold up the ball. Combine these qualities with his finishing ability and you have an excellent all-round striker.

In other words, he’d be a significant step-up on Olivier Giroud. Whilst there are no guarantees in football, I wouldn’t bet against Higuain being a regular 20-30 goals-a-season man for Arsenal. Playing as the Gunners’ main man, with the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere providing opportunities for him could really take his already impressive career to another level.

Given his stature in the game, it’s a little surprising that he’s available for just £22m. Whilst this would smash Arsenal’s transfer record (£15m), it would represent a bargain for a player who has already proved himself on the big stage. Regular goal-scorers are hard to come-by, especially ones with such pedigree. Arsenal would be foolish not to snap him up, so let’s hope all the stories are true.

What’s your take? Could Gonzalo Higuain really be on his way to the Emirates?

No one is interested in your negative slant on things. Just say what you have to say or keep quiet

He will end up somewhere other than Arsenal. It would be extremely out of character for a club notorious for being conservative in the transfer market to spend this kind of money – especially when it would impact so greatly on Mr Kroenke’s profit margin after all he is not here because he loves football or Arsenal Football Club he is here because he wants to make money..

If we get higuain, I wonder if you’ll show him the same disrespect you show to giroud and others if he doesn’t settle in straight away. Just to remind you giroud scored 17 in his first season. How is that bad? Just be respectful. It says a lot about you – especially if what you’re saying is just a matter of your subjectivity

This IS without a shadow of a doubt the most important signing of Arsenal’s summer.
He is the exact type of player we need and it would put out a real statement of our intent.
Higuain is a class act that is going for an absolute bargain in today’s grossly over inflated market. We need to follow this up with more good buys but THIS IS ESSENTIAL.
Higuain is THE missing link that can turn this great squad of confident players into a force to be reckoned with.
Saying this , however , I do believe that should we lose out on this proposed deal then we leave ourselves over to ridicule and scorn.
There is not one single striking option available to Arsenal than this match made in heaven and I , for one , pray that he realises this and if necessary digs a little deeper into his pocket than he would have otherwise liked to to insure Higuain’s signature.
Even the full 25.6 milion asking price is reasonable so PLEASE GOUGH UP BOSS. I’m counting on you BIG TIME
