Should Arsenal make a move for this goal-scoring Serbian super-star?

Josip IlicicArsenal’s failings this season have been there for everybody to see. From the very outset, it was clear that the Gunner’s lacked attacking endeavour.

The spark that always seems to inspire Arsene Wenger teams just hasn’t been there this year.

This, no doubt, is something that the Frenchman will try to fix in this summer’s transfer window.

After all, he won’t be satisfied with how this season has gone. Wenger has a year left on his Arsenal contract. Assuming he doesn’t negotiate an extension, I’m sure he’ll be looking to go out on top.

And with talks of a £70m transfer kitty, there’s every chance of this happening.

Despite a couple of naff signings over the last half-decade or so, nobody knows the transfer market quite like Wenger. It’ll be fascinating to see what he does when he’s got a large amount of money to play with.

According to The Express, Arsenal are the latest club to declare their interest in Palermo’s gifted midfielder, Josip Ilicic.

Ilicic is a 25-year-old attacking midfielder who has really rose to prominence over the course of this season. Whilst Palermo have disappointed as a club (getting relegated to Serie B), Ilicic has stood out as a diamond against the rough. His dynamic running, passing and shooting (he’s grabbed 10 goals this season) have caught the eye of fans and pundits alike.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini seems to realise that he’s not a player that his club will be able to keep hold of: “Josip Ilicic is a player for big clubs, so I really doubt he will stay with us. We will have to talk of course but he has already told me that he will leave if he gets an offer from a big club. And I don’t doubt that he will get one.”

That’s why Roma, Sampdoria and cash-rich Zenit St Petersburg are all thought to be interested. Arsenal are likely to face some competition if they do make a move for the player in the summer.

In many ways, he’d be your typical Arsenal signing. A player who most people have never heard of, who plays with grace, precision and pace.

Improving the midfield isn’t exactly Arsenal’s biggest priority this summer. But with Abou Diaby permanently injured and Tomas Rosicky growing in years, purchasing a squad player like this can’t hurt.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal sign Josip Ilicic, or do they have bigger fish to fry?

‘Gunners lacked attacking endeavour’ what does that say for all the other teams. Arsenal have scored the most goals at home, the third most in the Premier league home and away. With all the problems in defence, have the best away defence, conceding 5 goals fewer than the next best team! The table does not lie !!

You say we lacked attacking desire yet we only scored 3 less than Chelski with MANUre scoring 86, Citeh scored 6 less than us and were the only team to let in fewer goals.

All in all our For and Against stats were impressive, especially after the structure of the team was jeopordised by the greedy dutchman jumping ship after 6 lacklustre injury prone years.
