Will Arsenal really have to break the bank to get their man?

Julio CesarArsenal will go into the next transfer window in desperate need of signing a top quality keeper. This is not likely to be an easy task. After all, whilst there are a number of good goalies out there, very few of them have affordable price-tags.

Still, the Gunners can’t rely on the likes of Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone forever. They need somebody to come in and provide Wojciech Szczesny with some real competition.

Unsurprisingly, Arsenal have found themselves linked to Julio Cesar. The former Inter Milan keeper has just been relegated with QPR and will likely be looking to climb back to the top as soon as possible.

He’s too good to bide his time in the Championship and deserves to be playing his football for a club like Arsenal. Whether such a move will ever materialise, however, is no certain matter.

Even if Arsene Wenger is interested in the Brazilian, he’ll have to negotiate with QPR, a club with more money than sense. It also means dealing with Harry Redknapp. The QPR boss was recently asked his opinion on Cesar’s future, and didn’t hold back with his response:

“He wants to go to Arsenal? Arsene Wenger will be here tomorrow, if he’s interested, I’m sure he’ll speak to me. He’s a top, top goalkeeper. There’s no doubt about that. He’s a Brazil international so for him to play in the Championship next year would be difficult. I can understand that.

But he’s a good goalkeeper. It would take a good offer… You’ve got to get what you feel is value for him. He’s going to cost decent money if anyone wants to buy him.” (Source: Sky Sports)

As things stand, we don’t really know what Harry considers to be ‘decent money’. I think there may be a need for both sides to get realistic. If Arsenal are interested, they’ll have to pay a fair price for him. QPR on the other hand, need to recognise that his time at the club is over and that attempting to keep hold of an unhappy player could be costly.

Arsenal do have money to spend this summer. They’ve signed a top new commercial deal. What’s more, they’re in desperate need of a new keeper. The stars seem to be aligning here. Perhaps a good deal for all parties involved can be sought out?

What’s your take? Should the Gunners be in the market for Julio Cesar, or will QPR inflate his price-tag?
