Thiago AlcantaraDavid Moyes will arrive at Manchester United to find a strong squad, but one that’s in desperate need of some midfield inspiration.

Don’t get me wrong, Michael Carrick deserved his Player of the Year nomination. Shinji Kagawa too has also impressed on occasions and will likely come back stronger next year.

But with Paul Scholes retiring and Tom Cleverley still young, signing a top class midfielder could be just the ticket this summer.

It would certainly make David Moyes’ attempts to protect United’s title next season a lot easier. But who should the club snap up when the transfer window slides open?

My feeling is that Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara is exactly the kind of attacking talent that Manchester United should be hunting. The Italian-born youngster is one of world-football’s best young players and has a big future ahead of him.

A move to Old Trafford could pump rocket fuel into his development. With his pace, intelligence and trickery, he could quickly catch the eye in the Premier League. He’d certainly make Manchester United a more exciting team to watch.

According to Sport Witness, Barcelona are attempting to clear the decks and have made Alcantara available for just 25m euros. That’s approximately £21m. This is a fantastic price for a player who has the potential to become a pretty big deal.

Nobody would be surprised if he doubled his value over the next 3-4 seasons. All he needs now is opportunities.

He’s only made 33 appearances for Barca this season and is probably deserving of better. At 22-years-old, he can’t afford to wait for opportunities to be given to him. He needs to go to a club where he’ll get on the team sheet regularly.

If he were to settle in quickly at Old Trafford, I believe Manchester United would be able to offer this. With Anderson on the way out, the club needs another ‘next-big-hope’ to believe in. Alcantara certainly ticks that box.

And given his relatively cheap price-tag, this would be a difficult deal to argue against. Whether David Moyes is genuinely interested, however, is anybody’s guess. We’ll just have to watch this space.

What’s your take? Should new boss David Moyes look to snap up Thiago Alcantara, or should he be on the hunt for more a more experienced midfielder?
