Asmir BegovicWhere on earth has all this speculation regarding Pepe Reina’s future come from?

Whilst he hasn’t been Liverpool’s best performer this season, he is an Anfield mainstay and somebody who may go on to end his career with the Reds.

But these rumours (usually) don’t arrive from nowhere. They usually follow some kind of logic, or derive from some kind of source. So could Liverpool really be considering selling their Spanish stopper?

Perhaps Brendan Rodgers hasn’t taken a liking to Pepe. After all, his arrival at the club last summer more or less coincided with Reina’s decline in form.

Up until then, Pepe had been at the top of his game and was probably the Premier League’s best goalkeeper for a couple of seasons. But he certainly hasn’t been at his best this year.

He’s let in a number of easy goals, made a couple of mistakes and hasn’t controlled his penalty area with the same level of confidence as we’re accustomed to.

I realise that Pepe Reina is still a good keeper. Heck, on his day, he can be a great keeper. But his inconsistency has let him down this season. As a result, Liverpool have had no stability and even the normally solid centre-backs Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger have looked shakey on occasion as a result.

Pepe Reina is no longer a spring-chicken. His mistakes can’t be put down to inexperience. This makes some of his performances this season a little difficult to understand.

He’ll be 31-years-old this August. This age may signal the beginning of the end for most outfield players, but for a goalkeeper, it’s more like they’re entering the mid-stage of their career. Reina could still have 7-8 seasons left in him, but will they be with Liverpool?

According to The Mirror, there’s a good chance Reina will be snapped up by his old club Barcelona next summer. Should this happen, Rodgers will look to replace him with Stoke City’s highly-rated stopper, Asmir Begovic.

This, I think, would be a good trade off for Liverpool. The 25-year-old seems to be entering the best stage of his career. Pepe Reina, on the other hand, seems to be on the way out. If Barca offer good cash for the Spaniard, I wouldn’t blame Brendan if he agreed the sale.

And if he used the cash to sign Asmir Begovic, then that’s all the better.

What’s your take? Would you replace Pepe Reina with Asmir Begovic?

I would like to point out that this supposed story quoted in the Daily mirror originated in a spurious Spanish publication but claimed as a scoop by the Mirror. The Mirror for some time now seem to have adopted an aggressive dislike for Liverpool and have gone out of their way to cause us problems with their lies.

Another reason for speculation regarding Reina is in the form of his father who wants him to return to Spain and is always throwing spanners into the works. Unfortunately you will find idiots who believe everything they read in the red tops.

Brendan Rodgers is looking for a keeper, not to replace Reina but to replace Doni who any real supporter unlike the idiots will know had to retire with heart problems and our number 3 brad Jones doesn’t cut the mustard.

    Here Endeth The Lesson. LOL
