Should Arsenal splash their £70m transfer kitty on this Premier League star?

Wayne RooneyWhilst most Arsenal fans will view this season as a disappointment and missed opportunity, the Gunners’ failings this season were all too predictable.

You don’t sell the Premier League’s best striker, replace him with a French cart-horse and expect things to work out. That may be a little harsh on the hard-working, but limited Olivier Giroud, but the truth is plain for all to see: he’s no Robin Van Persie and never will be.

How Arsenal could have used a striker with real cutting edge this season. With Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla running the midfield, Arsenal are able to get the ball into dangerous areas. Unfortunately, they don’t have a striker mobile enough, or fit enough to convert this build-up play into goal-scoring opportunities.

This, you would hope, is something that Arsene Wenger will fix in the transfer market. The Frenchman, who is entering the last year of his Arsenal contract can’t be happy with the situation and will surely be looking to go out with a bang.

It’s reassuring then, that most news concerning Arsenal nowadays, seems to refer to the club’s ‘£70m transfer kitty’. That’s a lot of money. Here’s hoping Arsene puts it to good use.

The Mail recently reaffirmed this existence of his fabled transfer fund, whilst claiming: ‘Arsenal want Rooney’.

There’s no denying that Wayne Rooney is a top quality player. He’s among the best strikers in the world. But he’s also expensive. Manchester United wont want to let him go on the cheap and he currently picks up a £250k-a-week salary. That’s more than double what anybody receives at Arsenal.

There’s no reason to expect that Rooney would take a pay-cut either. Why would he leave the Premier League Champions to join a club that struggles to get into the top four and pick up less wages? He’d have to be barmy.

But I do hope Arsenal pursue Wayne Rooney. He’d be the perfect tonic to Olivier Giroud. Wayne Rooney is hard-working, passionate and effective. He also scores goals and can play in a few different positions on the pitch. In that sense, he’d fit in nicely at the Emirates, even if he would cost a pretty penny.

Of course, if Arsenal do have the £70m kitty to tap into, this wont be a problem. But would they be willing to break their wage structure?

What’s your take? Should the Gunners be in the market for Wayne Rooney?

70m Pounds what? Nooooo! That’s stupid!
Edison Cavani is better @ 56m pounds.

No way. We don’t need the fat useless potato man at Arsenal.

This is the guy who claimed that Air Alec Ferguson’s ambition did not match his own.
That alone should mean that it’s a big NO NO NO for this egomaniac,

  • COYG says:

No Nope no thanks. 230k wages waste of money for a smoking slightly chubby benched Utd striker. I’d rather Chicarito- if any. Rooney’s not the same player since he got his hair. There are better players out there. Not to mention the amount of times he’s dived for Penalties against us.

I’d rather have TORRES!! Suarez even.
