Have Arsenal got their transfer priorities right?

Yaya SanagoYou can hardly blame an Arsenal fan for getting excited when they see that their club is about to sign ‘Yaya’.

Neither can you blame them for feeling disappointed when they discover the player is not Manchester City’s buccaneering midfielder Yaya Toure and is actually a Ligue 2 youngster that has caught Wenger’s eye.

Of course, we’re all well accustomed to Arsene Wenger snapping up players that we’ve never heard of. Indeed, this was all well and good when Arsenal used to win things. But with the Gunner’s current standing in the game, it’s difficult to understand.

This is probably because the players Wenger used to sign, would go on and win things, regardless of their price-tag. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case anymore.

Arsene Wenger’s transfer track-record has been seriously damaged by the last half-decade or so. The Frenchman used to be the best manipulator of the transfer market in the game. Now, however, he’s probably dropped out of the top ten. Signing the likes of Marouane Chamakh, Sebastien Squillaci and Mikael Silvestre will do that to you.

So who is this Yaya Sanago?

He’s a French U21 striker, with a great goal-scoring record. He’s scored 8 goals in just 7 games this season (4 of which were as a substitute). If he’s on the pitch, he tends to find the back of the net.

Arsene Wenger has clearly seen something in the youngster that suggests he’s able to make the step up to the very top of the game. Speaking of how far along a deal is for Sanago, the Arsenal boss said: ‘It is in advanced stages, but it is not done.’ (Source: The Daily Mail).

This news is unlikely to create much excitement among Arsenal fans. After the season they’ve had, they’ll be hoping that their club signs players who are capable of making an immediate impact at the Emirates.

Sanago may go on to be a top player, but he’ll arrive at the Emirates and most likely head straight for the reserves. His goal-scoring record aside, he’s too young and too raw to be trusted with a role upfront in the Premier League. He needs more experience and he needs to learn ‘the Arsenal way’.

This raises the question: should Arsenal really be wasting their time negotiating these kind of deals? Doesn’t the club have bigger fish to fry?

The Gunners have to start aiming higher, or they risk getting left behind.

What’s your take? Do Arsenal have their transfer priorities right?
