Of all the Everton players linked to Manchester United since David Moyes was announced as the club’s new boss, Marouane Fellaini is the one that seems to offer the best fit.
Everton have plenty of good players. Leighton Baines would walk into more or less any team. Phil Jagielka is one of the Premier League’s best defenders.
But Marouane Fellaini, the technically gifted Belgium bruiser, is the main attraction. He’s the player that clubs should be queuing up for this summer. And they are: along with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also through to be interested.
But if David Moyes is able to use his connection to Fellaini to persuade the 25-year-old to follow him to Old Trafford, I certainly wouldn’t blame him.
Fellaini himself certainly rates Moyes very highly. Check out these quotes, carried by The Mirror: “I only want to go to a club where the manager really wants me. In 2008, Everton did everything to convince me, especially David Moyes. He made me the player I am now.”
As for his future? Fellaini is keeping his cards very close to his chest: “If I’m leaving Everton, I say if, it will depend on lots of factors”.
Whilst there’s nothing definitive there, there’s also nothing to suggest he’s keen to stay with the Toffees. If rumours of a £23m release-clause are true, I’m sure somebody will come knocking and test his Everton loyalty.
With Paul Scholes now enjoying a well earned retirement, United could use another competitive midfielder. Especially if that midfielder is also capable of knocking the ball about with the grace and ease of Marouane Fellaini.
Moyes has played Fellaini as a number 10 for most of the season, largely because Everton don’t have too many forward options. If he were to sign for Manchester United, I’m sure things would be different.
The Red Devils are spoilt for choice at the moment, with Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney all slamming home goals for fun. But there’s definitely space for Fellaini to take charge of the midfield and make it his own.
At 25-years-old, the big Belgium is about to enter the best years of his career. Why wouldn’t he want to spend them with Moyes, a man he admires greatly? Manchester United could use him, Moyes could use him and Fellaini could benefit from a move to a top club.
Doesn’t this feel like a match made in heaven (unless, of course, you’re an Everton fan)?
