Is the time right for Arsenal to swoop for this Manchester United mainstay?

Wayne RooneyThe news that Wayne Rooney is looking to move away from Manchester United this summer, was sure to be met by widespread, idle speculation about where his final destination will be. If it is true that he has no desire to stay at Manchester United any longer, there are sure to be plenty of clubs vying for his signature.

Goal.com claim that both Arsenal and Chelsea have ‘joined the scramble’ to snap up Wayne this summer. But do either club have what it takes to whisk the 27-year-old away from Old Trafford?

At his age, Wayne should be in the peak stages of his career. This season, however, has been far from his best. Though it hasn’t been a bad year by any means, his progression forward seems to have stopped. Maybe the England forward is looking for a change of scenery to re-ignite his career.

Better that, than sticking with United, getting dropped from big games and vying with big players like Robin Van Persie. If he moves to a club like Arsenal or Chelsea, he’d soon be crowned king of the hill.

But let’s not exaggerate Rooney’s faults. He’s nabbed 16 goals in 36 appearances this season and that’s not a bad conversion rate by any means. It also doesn’t account for his work-rate, his assists, and his build-up play when he’s been deployed deeper into the midfield. Suffice to say, stories of Wayne’s decline are somewhat exaggerated.

I expect Chelsea will look to sign a striker from abroad (Radamel Falcao or Edinson Cavani?). Arsenal, on the other hand, are in desperate need of a forward with Rooney’s quality. Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Gunners ended up trading Robin Van Persie for Wayne Rooney (albeit a season late)?

The Gunners would end up with a player who is two-years younger than RVP, but has the same match-winning streak. All-in-all, it would prove to some good maneuvering from Arsene Wenger.

There’s no word on what it would cost to buy Wayne Rooney, but Moyes wont want to hold onto him if he’s unhappy (not with the wage packet he’s picking up each week).

Arsenal, on the other hand, are flush, having just agreed a couple of big commercial deals. They could be ready to step up and offer Rooney the change he desires.

And wouldn’t things be interesting then?

What’s your take? Could Arsenal really sign Wayne Rooney?

There’s no way Arsenal will even bid for Rooney… Rooney is currently the highest paid in Manchester utd which Arsenal cannot afford to pay him leave alone his transfer fee. Arsenal cannot sign any player whose salary exceed 100k a week.

  • AB says:

utter rubbish. no way we would buy him; no way we would pay him what he currently gets; and sadly no real reason why he would come to us. if he leaves it will be a ‘Beckham’ and he will go to a glam club, with a fat pay packet – even if he wins diddly there

  • IMRAN SHAIKH says:
