Could this big transfer deal secure David Moyes’ future as Manchester United boss?

Cristiano RonaldoThe story that’s hung over the entire footballing world this week, has been Sir Alex Ferguson’s step down from the Manchester United throne and the quick introduction of David Moyes as his replacement.

For football fans everywhere, this is absolute massive, earth shattering news. The greatest manager of all time has stepped down and next years Premier League may be all the more interesting for it.

David Moyes is a quality, proven manager, but he has a massive task against him. It’s not unreasonable to think that he may take a season or two to settle down and really establish himself.

Unfortunately, Manchester United isn’t a club that’s accustomed to transitional periods. Fans have come to expect a constant stream of success. Sir Alex was able to deliver this. Can Moyes do the same?

Much may depend on  the level of freedom he’s granted in the transfer market. Whilst at Everton, he was often hamstrung by a lack of funds and an inability to go after big players. Hopefully at Old Trafford, that wont be the case.

Among all the Manchester United news over the last week, it was interesting to see the club get heavily linked to ex-winger and current world-beater, Cristiano Ronaldo.

He’s a player that has been linked to Manchester United for a season or so now, but things finally seem to be moving in the right direction.

The Daily Mail claimed that United’s chief executive David Gill has been out to Madrid to meet Ronaldo’s representative, Jorge Mendes. They also suggest that Manchester United are ‘confident’ of securing the player who once lit up Old Trafford all those years ago.

This strikes me as a little strange. Cristiano Ronaldo’s love for Sir Alex has been clear. C-Ron constantly acknowledges that the Scot was key in his evolution as a player and that he views him as a father figure. As far as I’m aware, he has no such feelings for David Moyes. Why would he suddenly make his return just as Sir Alex leaves?

Of course, if he does make the move, Manchester United would get their hands on the second best player in the world. Given that they already have one of the strongest squads in the world, they’ll be a genuine threat next season.

With power and pace like that moving forward, it’ll be difficult for David Moyes to put a foot wrong. It could be just what he needs to ensure a long and successful career at Old Trafford.

What’s your take? Could Manchester United really sign Cristiano Ronaldo?
