Forget Jovetic: Arsenal should pursue this cut-price goal-ace instead

Carlos VelaWith the summer fast approaching, speculation regarding Arsenal’s potential transfer window dealings is only likely to increase. Given the club’s many failings this season, the world will be watching to see whether Arsene Wenger will look to put together a proper team next season – one that’s capable of challenging for silverware.

It’s sure to make for interesting viewing.

One key area that Arsenal will need to assess, is their forward line-up. The Gunners sold Dutch ace Robin Van Persie last summer and are yet to really replace him.

Sure Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud have been brought in, but the German has had injury problems (and fitness problems?) and the Frenchman would get beaten for pace in an OAP resting home.

Whilst Gervinho is something of a wildcard, his inconsistency will rule him out of a proper run as a striker. Theo Walcott, for all his remonstrating, just isn’t ready to take up a role down the middle.

Could the answer to Arsenal’s attacking woes come in the form of an ex-player? A player who spent most of his Arsenal career getting ridiculed.

The man in question is Carlos Vela, who left the Emirates to move to Real Sociedad back in 2012. This was the club the Gunners loaned him to back in 2011, where he scored 12 goals in 35 appearances. This year, he’s already notched 13 goals in 32 appearances, along with 11 assists. This is a fine return for a young player (24-years-old).

In fact, it’s worth comparing Vela to another rumoured Arsenal target, Stevan Jovetic. He’s a year younger than Vela, and offers similar figures going forward. He scored 14 goals in 29 appearances last season and has 12 this season from 29. Yes, he’s a technically gifted player, but doesn’t Vela offer similar levels of ability?

If Arsenal do go after Jovetic in the transfer market, they’ll have to break their transfer record. Vela, on the other hand, could be picked up relatively cheaply. It’s claimed that there is a clause in his contract that will allow Arsenal to buy him back at a  price that was agreed upon last summer.

That’s beginning to look like some smart wheelin’ & dealin’ from Wenger.

Vela himself acknowledges that a move could be on the cards: “Going back to Arsenal? It could happen at any moment, but I don’t want to think about it”. (Source: Sky Sports)

The stars seem to be aligning on this one – I hope Vela is on Arsene Wenger’s transfer wish list this summer.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Carlos Vela back at the Emirates?

It will only work if Wenger plays the guy in his natural position and doesn’t try to ‘reinvent’ him.
Why could he not flourish at Arsenal and can somewhere else?
I have said that Wenger appears to have a talent for suppressing talent in ayers.
Podolski arrived having scored 18 goals through the center in a relegation threatened team. What does Wenger do? Try to reinvent him on the wing and restrict playing time as he works closely with him. Doing what? He is already the finished article not a 17 yr old, let him play!

Are you seriously mad? Vela and goal machine could never be used in the same sentence. He awful lets face it if he comes because he’ll bench warm and you’ll brand him ‘useless’

this is testimony that Carlos was a star in the making, though Arsenal was impatient to see him develop fully, with the statistics put forward, i would rate Carlos far higher than than most of our players we are patiently giving time to develop. therefore lets welcome him back ‘home’ with open hands, not as a prodigal son but one who went to gather a wealth of experience!

    stupid article

  • brian gooner says:

    Utter rubbish.

  • Elliott says:

Yes lets welcome him with open hands,he might be the perfect one we’ve been waiting to fill the space left by our perfect finisher..his highness(Robin Vanpersie)..thanks.

  • Dazzler says:

No to vela, don’t waste time, he had his chances. Don’t force a move for a player who does not want to play for us

  • emeksfab says:

Rubish article..vela is a promising talent but coming back 2 arsenal right now will hinder his progress,so he should wait mayb till next 2 seasons.

  • Dave says:

    1) Sell Gervinho n bring back Vela. 2) Sell Giroud, Arshavin, Bendtner, Park n Chamakh n bring in Jovetic. 3) Sell Diaby, Coqueline n Frimpong & bring in 2 decent n reliable DMF in d mould of Wanyama or Fellaini or Gundogan or Gonalons or Capoue or Matuidi & Diame.
    4) Sell Vermaelen, Santos, Djorou, Squilacci & Miquel n bring in Ashley Williams n N’kolou.
    5) Sell Fabianski n Mannone n bring in Julio Cesar n Rene Adler. 6) Promote partially some youngsters e.g J.Campbell, Akpom, Aneke, Eisfield, Gnabry, Watt, Zelalem, Bellerin, Toral, Yenaris n Miyachi frm d youth ranks in2 d 1st team n play dem in some cup games 2 build dia confidence (bt not in quarter or sem-finals or finals round). • Andreas says:

Some of the players you want them to seek have expiring contracts this summer, Fabianski and Squillaci to name two.

    • herbertmujungu says:

      Very gud of your thinking

    • Jeff says:

Rather than giroud i would sell podolski walcott n gervinho, and buy reus and higuain/jovetic. We can rotate cazorla, giroud, chamberlain, reus and either higuain and jovetic.

  • abig says:

gud1, al i need is truphy nxt season

  • eugene says:

    foolish idear,bring jovetic period

  • adewunmi seye says:

We need a striker that is feared by defenders and keepers not an average one, strikers like henry, rvp, without that we are going nowhere giroud is not our solution he is slow and indecisive he only depend on his head and tap ins, walcot is even feared more than him cos be is fast and finishes well

  • noper says:

those goals vela scored include alot of penalties

  • Twig says:

    No
    no
    NO

  • Ian says:

Not bad. Sell all those mentioned, I’d keep frimpong though and watts already gone. Bring in benteke up front rather than jovetic. Piszcek at rb (if sagna leaves)I think rosicky might go and diaby should stick around. Song is a better dm than all those others and I’ve heard about schneiderlin coming in which would be decent.

    COYR
