Forget Jovetic: Arsenal should pursue this cut-price goal-ace instead

Carlos VelaWith the summer fast approaching, speculation regarding Arsenal’s potential transfer window dealings is only likely to increase. Given the club’s many failings this season, the world will be watching to see whether Arsene Wenger will look to put together a proper team next season – one that’s capable of challenging for silverware.

It’s sure to make for interesting viewing.

One key area that Arsenal will need to assess, is their forward line-up. The Gunners sold Dutch ace Robin Van Persie last summer and are yet to really replace him.

Sure Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud have been brought in, but the German has had injury problems (and fitness problems?) and the Frenchman would get beaten for pace in an OAP resting home.

Whilst Gervinho is something of a wildcard, his inconsistency will rule him out of a proper run as a striker. Theo Walcott, for all his remonstrating, just isn’t ready to take up a role down the middle.

Could the answer to Arsenal’s attacking woes come in the form of an ex-player? A player who spent most of his Arsenal career getting ridiculed.

The man in question is Carlos Vela, who left the Emirates to move to Real Sociedad back in 2012. This was the club the Gunners loaned him to back in 2011, where he scored 12 goals in 35 appearances. This year, he’s already notched 13 goals in 32 appearances, along with 11 assists. This is a fine return for a young player (24-years-old).

In fact, it’s worth comparing Vela to another rumoured Arsenal target, Stevan Jovetic. He’s a year younger than Vela, and offers similar figures going forward. He scored 14 goals in 29 appearances last season and has 12 this season from 29. Yes, he’s a technically gifted player, but doesn’t Vela offer similar levels of ability?

If Arsenal do go after Jovetic in the transfer market, they’ll have to break their transfer record. Vela, on the other hand, could be picked up relatively cheaply. It’s claimed that there is a clause in his contract that will allow Arsenal to buy him back at a  price that was agreed upon last summer.

That’s beginning to look like some smart wheelin’ & dealin’ from Wenger.

Vela himself acknowledges that a move could be on the cards: “Going back to Arsenal? It could happen at any moment, but I don’t want to think about it”. (Source: Sky Sports)

The stars seem to be aligning on this one – I hope Vela is on Arsene Wenger’s transfer wish list this summer.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Carlos Vela back at the Emirates?

i love silly season…everyone with their wish lists putting in their 2p worth in.
Given wengers history do you really think/believe that: A) Wenger will spend the sort of sums of money that have been banded around in the gutter press? B) They will be whole sale changes in the summer? C) We have available, the sort of money thats been talked about?

It will take 3-4 seasons to bulid a squad that’s cappable of actually winning the premier league or champions league. Would be happy with a couple of seasons of top 3 consolidation with a small push for the title and a little gap closing between us and the manchester clubs… And maybe one or two fa cup wins in next 3 years til then

    Can my gunner return?

  • nelvin says:

Bring in striker like cavani, lewandoski who are being afraid by defenders n goalkeepers

  • ivan katuramu says:

vela has always been promising am gland he has proven it. he should come back but jovetic is as well sensentional talent we need.both should be persued.

I have realised that the most of arsenal fans hate Oliver Girourd and the reasons mentioned are wrong.
Could anyone remind me a single striker who scored 19 goals for the first season? ??

  • maclean moyo says:

He is a regular at Sociedad and that’s why he has scored that number. Vela isn’t that innovative…just like Giroud…just lacks ideas on one on one with a defender or goalie, just shoots without thinking. We need someone who is better than the lot we’v got, otherwise we’ll be a frustrated lot AGAIN. Remyis a more rounded and mobile go-getter! Let’s not go around the world blindly hunting for strikers who we can’t even afford when we can get a very able, reliable and cheap one next door!

  • Reece says:

Fact is, if vela was given the same amount of games as walcott and bendtner from 06-12 he would be ALOT better than walcott. But nope, he was never given a chance

  • Jay Bin Shik0bama says:

The fact is that there are few left footed strikers that can perform for a big team and too many left footed players in the field mathematically is a worse nightmare. Arsenal have too many left footerd players in Gibbs, Moreal, pondy, giroud, wilshere, verm.. beside, Vela is not the playe to change a team. he failed and went to an easy league where he can establish him self. Coming back will be his career jeopardy. What we need now is a right footed striker or who can shoot with boot feet acurate. no more surplus to requirements.

  • MUSTERPHY says:

From my own opinion,i think all whatwe needs is a rugged stricker who can score from outside box. If u watch man u. very well most of their goals come FROM outside box.
