Raphael VaraneOf all the young defensive talents dragging their feet across Europe’s penalty areas, none are as highly rated as Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

The French prodigy has had a heap of pressure pressed onto his shoulders, but has thus far stood firm. To be 19-years-old and play such a prominent role in a talented Madrid side is quite the achievement.

It’s little wonder that he has started to attract the attention of other clubs throughout Europe. This is clearly a player who could go on to be a world-class star (he’s almost there already!) Just how good could he be in two-or-three season’s time?

One of the reasons he’s so admired is that he’s a good all-rounder. That’s to say, it’s hard to find a real weakness, or any aspect of the game that he ‘lacks’.

He’s strong in the air, quick along the ground, powerful but not without technical ability and he’s also got his head screwed on the right way. He knows where to position himself on a football pitch and has a willingness to take on all comers.

It’s these qualities that attracted Real Madrid, who signed him from Lens back in 2011. It’s also thought that Manchester United were interested in Varane back before Madrid made their interest concrete. The Star claim that he’s ‘the one that got away for Manchester United’.

And now they claim that United are ready to swoop back in this summer and finally get their man.

Varane is no stranger to Manchester United fans. He was remarkably effective during the club’s two leg Champions League thriller with Madrid and probably stirred certain feelings of desire within Sir Alex Ferguson.

After all, Rio Ferdinand isn’t getting any younger and if Nemanja Vidic’s knees were any creakier, they’d need new hinges installed and oiled. Adding to United’s list of young defensive talents couldn’t be a bad thing.

Whilst Varane is under contract with Madrid until June 2017, he’s believed to have a release clause worth around £26m. That may seem like a lot for a 19-year-old, but it could end up being a smart investment for Manchester United. He’s a player who could add £10m to his price-tag over the course of any potential new contract.

Given this and his clear talent, I’d be right behind this transfer.

What’s your take, would Raphael Varane be a good addition for Manchester United?

I am very excited by this rumour because i believe Raphael Varane is currently the best young defender in the world and would make Man Utd even better. He is exactly what we should be looking at in the transfer market. Add Mario Gotze and Kevin Strootman and we cud be looking at a possible treble in 2014.

  • Afzal Jkhan says:

Great player with great future no doubt. There may be a 26M pounds release clause in his contract but that does not mean that the player will want to leave Real for United. It’s presumptuous to take that for granted. After all he did choose Madrid over Manchester a couple of years ago, didn’t he ?

  • noldus tullingsen says:

    forget it.
madrid will never sell him, and varane won’t leave madrid for a lesser club like man u.

  • Olaminiyi says:

We don’t have to splash too much on Rafael Varane, why can’t we go for his country counterpart,in the name of Zouma?

  • Umar Zubairu Mohammad says:

I DONT THINK THIS TRANSFER CAN HAPPENS WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. SO JUST KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHOUT.
