Mario GotzeAlongside a relatively disappointing midweek draw with Everton, Arsenal faced further disappointment when one of their key transfer targets expressed interest in joining another club.

Rejection can be tough, but the Gunners may face plenty of it this summer if they attempt to go after top players, without being able to offer Champions League football.

With their season still very much up in the air, and fourth (and third) place still up for the taking, there’s no guarantee Arsenal will be able to offer their players an opportunity to play at the very top level.

If Tottenham earn Champions League football ahead of Arsenal, will players start heading in that direction instead?

It’s certainly a possibility. You don’t have to look any further than this Daily Mail story to see how European status (along with a bunch of history) can make a real difference when it comes to a player making up his mind.

This source claims that Arsene Wenger was hatching a ‘bold plan’ to ‘lure’ Mario Gotze to the Emirates this summer.

The Borussia Dortmund midfield maestro is among Europe’s most highly rated players and yet he’s just 20-years-old. With unique levels of technical ability, an eye for a pass and a dynamic all-action playing style, pundits and fans alike have been drawn to the young German talent.

He’s up there with Jack Wilshere when it comes to midfield players of the future. That’s why he’s earned himself a £31.5m release clause.

Whether or not Arsenal’s interest is genuine is more or less beside the point. After all, the player himself doesn’t even have the Gunners on his radar. When asked about interest from abroad and whether he would move on from Dortmund, he responded:

“I am very happy at Dortmund and satisfied with the way we are progressing as a team,’ he said. ‘Any thoughts about playing for another team are very much for the future, but Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United could be interesting.”

He’s clearly aiming for the top, somewhere Arsenal haven’t really been since their ‘Invincible’ season (or perhaps the 2006 Champions League final).
If a club like Arsenal no longer interests a player like Mario Gotze, then the Gunners are in a poor position moving forward.
Manchester United, on the other hand, could be about to get their hands on a real gem. Sir Alex may face a battle from Wenger, but should he succeed, United’s midfield will be secure for years to come.
What’s your take? Should Manchester United battle Arsenal for this dynamic midfield talent?

Mario Gotze is just the kind of player we should be looking at: young, hungry, talented and the potential to be a world class match-winning player. Include Kevin Strootman, Robert Lewandowski and possibly Raphael Varane or James Rodrigues and we could be looking at another treble in 2014.
