David VillaRemember January? Arsenal were still in the running for a few major competitions and were constantly being linked to some big players (Stevan Jovetic, Edinson Cavani, David Villa, etc). Halcyon days for the Gunners.

Whilst the complexion of Arsenal’s season differs drastically now, it wouldn’t surprise me if Arsene Wenger was still interested in one or more of these players.

After it, they’re all strikers and this is still an area where Arsenal need to improve.

With Olivier Giroud misfiring more often than not, Gervinho the Premier League’s most perplexing talent and Theo Walcott (and Lukas Podolski!) pushed out wide, nobody has really stepped up and claimed the centre-forward position as their own.

Whilst the goals have been shared about, having a reliable striker, would certainly come in handy for Arsenal.

Wenger missed his opportunity during the January transfer window, but could redeem himself this summer.

Sports Witness claim that there has been some movement when it comes to Arsenal’s pursual of Barcelona’s David Villa.

It’s thought that Arsenal were willing to pay £10m for the Spaniard’s services during January, but that Barca weren’t willing to let him go for that price.

But Barca recently held a ‘transfer summit’ (is that a thing?) where they decided that they were willing to let go of Villa (and Alexis Sanchez) and would be more open when it came to negotiation.

This could mean that if Arsenal were to re-table a bid, the Gunners would find themselves successful. Of course, the details are sketchy at the moment, but it’s not difficult to imagine Barca being willing to let go of Villa, with all the talent at their disposal.

Whilst injuries have held Villa back in recent years, he’s still a world-class talent. You don’t get to be Spain’s top scorer by a twist of fate. He’s up there with the greats because he’s an excellent finisher, whose mobility, position and technical ability are amongst the best in Europe.

Age may be an issue, but if Barca are willing to let him go for the right price, Arsenal shouldn’t hold back. They need somebody who can score with some regularity and Villa certainly ticks that box.

And if they buy another player to support Villa, Arsenal may well have enough going forward to challenge for the title next season.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Arsenal competing for David Villa once more?
