Is the time really up on Thomas Vermaelen’s Arsenal career?

Thomas VermaelenI have to admit it: I feel a little sorry for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen.

Yes, he’s been the architect of his own downfall at the Emirates, but that doesn’t make his story any less sad. It’s got so bad, that The Daily Mail are claiming that he’s on ‘borrowed time’ at Arsenal.

He plays with such passion, such energy and drive. It’s tough watching anybody who throws himself into each game end up being labelled a flop.

There are players in the Premier League who coast by on the strength of their reputation. Vermaelen, on the other hand, has been found accountable for Arsenal’s frailties this season.

And rightfully so. I may well feel disappointed for the Belgium bruiser, but I certainly can’t dispute that his errors have cost Arsenal this year.

Sloppy clearances, rushed tackles and needless free-kicks have been the story of his season. He’s even started slipping over in costly positions. His over-exuberance seems to be his downfall at the moment. It’s almost as though he’s trying too hard.

I’d argue this is linked to his role as club captain. Following a series of poor results early on in the season, Vermaelen must surely have felt a need to step up. To be a man for all seasons. As a result, he’s over exerted himself and played with reckless abandon. In attempting to play outside of his skin, he’s allowed inconsistency to creep into his game.

Perhaps he just needs to step back, consider the situation and start getting the basics right once again. He certainly has plenty of time for contemplation. The 27-year-old is no longer one of Arsenal’s first choice centre-backs.  Arsene Wenger has recently spoken about his decision to relegate Vermaelen to the bench:

“It’s a very difficult decision. I don’t see him as a substitute at all.”

That may well be the case, but as things currently stand, he’s certainly behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order.

Still, I hope he doesn’t give up fighting for his place. He was made captain for a reason – on his day, he’s an astounding defender. Strong, physical and with an indomitable spirit. When he’s got his head screwed on properly, he’s the real deal.

The close season will offer him an opportunity to put his career back together and start forming a case for more first team football. I still think that Vermaelen has plenty to offer this Arsenal side, so let’s not jump the gun just yet.

What’s your take? Does Thomas Vermaelen still have what it takes to make it at a top club?

The story that Vermealen is not good enough is false. The decision to drop TV was not wise. TV is the starting point of our revival in defense. Prior to that remember the days of DJOURUs, GALLAS, TOURE,SANDROS,CLICHY days…
It is a simple fact that fans expects a lot from TV and his mistakes are over rated. Still in TV, KOS, MONREAL we have world standard player. what we need are one more CB (PER as 4 th one only ) ,RB & GK.
One more…A manager who is sure of himself and doesn’t get preplexed by fan’s reactions..
