Do Arsenal really face a battle to keep hold of Jack Wilshere?

Jack Wilshere Jonas OlssonArsenal fans have grown accustomed to their brightest and best flying the coup and landing at rivals club.

The Gunners’ strange transfer policy has seen the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie leave the club in recent years. In the cases of Nasri and Van Persie, these players left to join Arsenal’s direct rivals (Manchester City and Manchester United).

These high-profile exits have given rise to the view that Arsenal can’t keep a hold of their best players. To put it another way, Arsenal are considered by some to be a ‘feeder club’ – a club that develops players to sell them on for a big fee.

But whilst Arsenal have brought in a decent amount of money through out-going transfers, they’ve also found success drifting away in recent years. This will surprise no one, but it seems that selling your best player each summer is not a pathway to success.

Could the same thing happen this summer?

Whilst Santi Cazorla has been fantastic this year, the player the Gunners most need to keep a hold of is Jack Wilshere, the club’s big hope for the future.

His direct running, his speed of passing and his expansive footballing brain have pundits purring and it’s clear he’s the future of Arsenal’s (and England’s) midfield.

So it was distressing to see a Daily Star headline, that read: ‘Jack Wilshere may quit Arsenal’.

Yes, this sentence doesn’t really mean anything. Any player could potentially quit any club. But the fact that former Arsenal midfielder, Perry Groves, is peddling this doggy muck is a little disappointing.

Groves claims: “Arsenal have probably got another season of Jack Wilshere. If they don’t win anything Jack might think about moving on.”

This kind of rabble-rousing helps nobody and is also a bit insulting to young Jack, a man who is constantly re-affirming his loyalty to Arsenal. If he wasn’t interested in remaining with the Gunners, why did he sign a bumper new deal this year?

Oh and let’s not forget, Jack Wilshere has promised to remain at Arsenal forever. Here’s a video link of him doing so.

I understand that a player like Jack Wilshere may get restless if success continues to evade this Arsenal side. But at 21-years-old, he should be in no rush. And neither should the former Arsenal legends that are so quick to question his loyalty.

What’s your take? Will Arsenal be able to keep hold of Jack Wilshere?
