Ilkay GundoganYou can tell Tottenham are having a fantastic season, not just from their position in the Premier League table, but also from the quality of players they are now getting linked to.

For a while now, Spurs fans have had to make do with feeding off the scraps of bigger clubs. Things change however and now Tottenham have their very own place at the table.

That’s not to say that they get first dibs (am I stretching this metaphor too far?), but it’s a good position to be in.

If Tottenham do finish in the top four this season, earning Champions League football, they’ll be in a very powerful position when it comes to attracting top class talent this summer.

Whether or not the club has decent money to spend is another matter. The fact is, however, is that Tottenham can now compete with Arsenal (if not Chelsea, Manchester City, etc) in the transfer market.

As a result, we’ve seen Spurs get linked to some rather exciting players over the last six months. Not the least of which, is Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, who TalkSPORT claim is a Tottenham target.

At 22-years-old, the young German ace has developed a major reputation. He may not quite be on Mario Gotze’s level (the 20-year-old attacking midfielder who plays with Gundogan at Dortmund) but he’s certainly set for big things.

Gundogan strikes me as a younger, more energetic Scott Parker. A defensive-minded midfielder who switches effortless into attacking mode and is more than capable of flexing his creative muscles and sparking a counter-attack.

He’s got a great engine on him, will run all game and links up with his team-mates well. The only thing missing from his game at the moment is goals.

With Sandro’s injury problems and Scott Parker’s age, I wouldn’t be particularly surprised if Andre Villas Boas was weighing up his options in this department. But Gundogan wouldn’t come cheap. TalkSPORT claim that he’d set back any potential new club £21.5m.

That would be a significant investment for a club that is also in desperate need of signing a world-class striker. But it would also be the kind of monetary backing that AVB needs to make sure his side become a regular top four club.

Gundogan is not just a luxury signing. He’s the kind of signing who can provide Spurs with a platform to build upon and potential for silverware in the future.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Ilkay Gundogan ply his trade at White Hart Lane?

Seems unlikely that we’d smash the club transfer record for a 22 year old defensive midfielder.

Na we need a striker like damiao or benzema and a playmaker would b nice

Spurs cannot compete in transfer market with clubs with a higher turnover. FACT. Just because we finished above Chelsea last season, does that mean that players would rather come to us? No. They will go to Chelsea for higher wages, and hyped-up Chelsea on their CV… Being “linked” to players is no sign of improvement. The improvement comes from us now expecting to be in or very near to top 4 each season, as opposed to the pre-Levy era where 7th was a big achievement. Our finances are better. We have better players. Kids are wearing Spurs shirts, hats etc… This is how we can tell that we are going in the right direction. Sign player for 20m, NO THANKS. It is a waste of money for us. We should stay: 10-16m max. Our star wingers Bale and Lennon cost a combined 6m. Let’s not forget that.
