Why Arsenal should look to Real Madrid to fix their defensive problems:

|

Raul AlbiolThe one problem that Arsene Wenger has never quite been able to fix, is that involving his leaky defense.

You get the feeling that Arsenal could have it all, if they could only add some solidity to their soft centre.

But whilst Arsene Wenger is responsible for a number of world-class attacking line-ups, he’s never really had a chance to prove his nous as a defensive coach.

He’s never really been willing to spend big on a defender. Sure, he’ll splash out £10m on an experienced French centre-back, but it’s difficult to imagine Wenger splashing the cash on a top class £20m+ defender.

It’s always felt like the defence has been an afterthought at Arsenal during the Wenger years. Whether it’s not recruiting the right personnel, or failing to put the right amount of coaching resource into developing these players and adapting the Arsenal system around them, the Gunners’ defensive frailties are beginning to look terminal.

By now, there’s fair reason to assume that Arsenal won’t win a trophy again until they fix this issue. After all, their defence seems to be bottling it on every big ocassion available to them (against Spurs recently, in the big cup ties this season and against Bayern).

A good place to start, would be to buy centre-backs that fit into the Arsenal system.

It’s frustrating to see the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker (especially) get out-paced by all and sundry and with such ease. It makes you long for the pace and endeavour of Kolo Toure at his Arsenal best.

But there may be solace ahead for Arsenal fans. According to reports (via GiveMeFootball), Arsenal have made Real Madrid centre-back Raul Albiol a top transfer target. You get the feeling that an experienced defender like Albiol, who has played against some top class talent in La Liga, wouldn’t have stood for the goals Arsenal conceded against Tottenham.

He’s has been a part of a well marshalled Jose Mourinho defence and knows how to defend against all comers, whether they’re pacey, strong, or tricky. With that in mind, I’d argue that he has the ability to fit into an Arsenal system that usually makes defenders look hapless.

The Spaniard has made only six League starts this season and would surely fancy another opportunity with a top club. And at just 27-years-old, he’s still got it in him.

What’s your take? Is this plucky Spaniard exactly what Arsenal need to fix their defensive woes?

Very encouraging. Directing us to a Madrid reject or bit part player, eh? And, Vermaelen is no slouch so I am not sure we you came about suggesting that “Thomas and Per (especially) get out-paced easily…”. Not saying we don’t need improvements in defense but Wenger should be allowed to make that call. Ashley Williams? Now, that is someone I can consider to partner Koscielny.
