Is this Portuguese talent destined for a Manchester United move?

|

Ezequiel GarayWhen it comes to Manchester United, it seems that all the talk about Wayne Rooney’s future has distracted from Sir Alex’s defence and midfield, two areas that will definitely need to be looked at this summer.

Whilst Manchester United are spoiled for choice upfront, they don’t have such a multitude of options in these two other areas.

I can only hope that Fergie is dedicating as much time to signing long-term replacements for Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand as he is towards re-negotiating terms with Wayne Rooney.

In this regard, I was pleased to see an article in the Daily Mail claiming that Ezequiel Garay is looking to secure a move to Manchester United next summer. Garay recently acquired the services of ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes – the man who brought Cristiano Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani and Bebe to Manchester United.

Unlike those four Portuguese born footballers, Garay is an Argentinian who has been making waves in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. He’s also picked up 11 caps for the Argentinian national side and is thought to be one of the best defensive talents in Europe.

What’s more, he’s a former Real Madrid star (though he only made 25 appearances in three years and was the fourth choice centre-back for much of his stay). Since leaving the Bernabeu, however, his career has kicked up a gear.

He has made 39 appearances for Benfica since his move and has become an integral part of a team that is always competing for silverware in Portugal. Since he’s re-found his feet, you get the feeling that Garay may fancy another shot at a big club.

And Manchester United certainly qualify as a ‘big club’. Rio Ferdinand is getting on in years and isn’t as effective as he used to be. Then there’s Nemanja Vidic, whose injury problems require him to be used sparingly. Whilst United have young talent coming through the ranks, it will be important to intersperse these players with experienced veterans like Garay.

The Argentinian defender is quick along the ground, but he’s also strong and can out-muscle most forwards. He’s an intelligent player, who positions himself well and isn’t afraid to throw himself in front of crosses. He’d be an excellent addition to Manchester United’s squad and he probably wouldn’t break the bank either.

What’s your take? Should Sir Alex be looking to bolster his defense and would Ezequel Garay be the right man for the job?

It all sounds wonderful , but a word of caution here Sir Alex
has never had any real success with Argentine players at Manchester United, Argentinians are tempermental but brilliant footballers ,Alex Ferguson rules with an iron fist demanding total loyalty from his players, but Argentinians will question decisions
they do not agree with, it is their culture, hence the big problem ,
Fergie will say to his troops go out and die with glory, Argentinians will argue there must be a better way, hence the clash of the titans, Argentine footballers are well worth the money paid for them, but Sir Alex has an unforgiving scottish nature that does not go down well with brilliant tempremental footballers from Argentina,
