The £4.5m bargain Liverpool can’t afford to miss:

|

Lucas BigliaThe way Liverpool’s season is going, you’d forgive fans for looking forward to next summer, with the hope that the club will make some serious investment in some serious talent.

Because, despite having a talented group of individuals, this team doesn’t seem to be able to pull off important victories, or get a run of games together. There are players here that could form the backbone of a winning Liverpool team. Brendan Rodgers just needs to drop the deadwood and replace it with quality.

But there’s the issue – Liverpool aren’t exactly rolling in cash. After a certain degree of recklessness from Kenny Dalglish, John Henry and co have buttoned down the hatches and offered slightly more meager (though still pretty reasonable) budgets to their manager.

The result? Liverpool will have to bring in players to improve the side, without breaking the bank? With that in mind, who should they be looking at?

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are in the market for Argentine playmaker Lucas Biglia. The defensive midfielder is a player whose name has popped up in conjunction with a number of clubs. But I think he’d be an excellent fit at Anfield.

For a start, he’d cost the Reds just £4.5m – Anderlecht’s managing director Herman van Holsbeck has said: ‘if we get 5.5m euros for Biglia during the next transfer window, we will be happy’. A pretty good bargain for a player who’s a fully fledged Argentinian International (7 caps).

His low-price tag may be down to a disciplinary issue earlier this season. Biglia was suspended for failing going absent without leave, a symbol of his and the club’s general discontent with each other. It looks like the 27-year-old is set for bigger and better things – Real Madrid, Napoli and Fiorentina are also thought to be interested.

Biglia would provide Lucas Leivas with some competition and help to toughen up the Reds midfield. He’s tough, he snaps into challenges and he’s a real ball winner. He’s also more than capable of moving the ball about, switching play and unlocking defenses. Yes, he’s predominantly a defender, but he’s a pretty good all-rounder who seems to be custom built for the Premier League.

He’s set for a move to a big club sooner or later, I just hope it’s to Liverpool.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be in the market for Anderlecht’s Lucas Biglia?
