So, Daniel Sturridge is now a Liverpool player and his goal against Mansfield has already gone some of the way towards persuading the naysayers, that he won’t be a flop at Anfield.

Plenty of questions marks were raised over the 23-year-old’s move to Liverpool, but I’d argue this has more to do with the current critical perception of the Reds. Liverpool are everybody’s favourite whipping boys at the moment and I think that a good number of people are struggling to come to terms with the fact that Brendan Rodgers has made a smart addition to his squad at a fair price.

But if Liverpool want to clamber up the Premier League table, they can’t afford to sit still. Yes, the club is a little strapped for cash, but further additions are necessary to make this team competitive once more. If Brendan is genuinely aiming for a fourth place finish, he still has plenty of work left to do this January.

One of his areas of concern may be the defence. Whilst Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger are two of the Premier League’s best defenders, beyond them, the Reds look a little short.

After all, Jamie Carragher, 34-years-old, isn’t getting any younger and looked a little short of pace when called upon last season. Then there’s Sebastian Coates, who looks like a good player, but may well move away from Anfield as a result of homesickness.

This brings me to a story courtesy of Jamie Sanderson at The Metro. He claims that Liverpool are ‘closing in’ on a deal for Lazio’s ace defender, Modibo Diakite. Indeed, they’re said to be holding their second round of talks with the Serie A side.

Diakite, a tall, powerful defender would represent great value for Liverpool. He’s a real physical presence, with a great reading of the game and as his contract will run out at the end of the season, Lazio are likely to want to wrap up a bargain deal for the player rather than risk losing him for free next summer.

As a second or third choice centre-back, there are few better options out there for a similar price than Diakite.

Whilst he wouldn’t be as important a signing as Daniel Sturridge is, I’d say he’d make a pretty fantastic addition to this Liverpool squad.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be in the market for Modibo Diakite?

  • Dude says:

He’s pants. Very raw. An accident waiting to happen. Big clumsy oaf is the words I’d use to describe him.

I thought our second buy would be Ince, we are already in advanced talks. As for Diakite, I read somewhere that we did not succeed.

  • Taban Isaac says:

he will be very good addition to bring compatition to liverpool central defence and attimes Aggar makes some funney mistake when we play those clubs playing arial ball so to me he will be good addition

  • Fred says:

Sounds like a typical mid table manager’s buy. Rodgers has no idea how to manage a top club. His buffoonary over Sahin is just one example. He even thinks Joe Allen is worth £15m – enough said.

  • dill says:

You cant say sturridge is not going to be a flop just cause he scored 1 goal against a blue square premiere side.I think he needs to score a few in our league before we can make that assumption

  • nma says:

errrrr, sorry dill but you blatantly dont recall he scored 8 in 12 games on loan to bolton a few seasons ago, does that qualify as a few in our league??

    hmm, thought so.
