The £10m midfield enforcer that Arsenal desperately need?

A lot of Arsenal fans are crying out for Arsene Wenger to mix things up a little bit. To turn from his own philosophy and bring in a midfield enforcer type player who can protect the likes of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla.

Of course, it will pain Arsene Wenger to sign a player who isn’t coming to the Emirates to simply play ‘beautiful football’ and cut clean passes, demonstrate technical expertise and dance round the opposition.

The truth is, however, Arsenal haven’t played beautiful football for a long time. They’re too busy being hounded by opposition midfielders, are never given any time to linger on the ball and are closed down too quickly to perform any particularly tasty moves.

They need some additional protection – a Yann M’Vila type signing, to help keep the weaker players playing their best football.

Unfortunately, Yann M’Vila is receiving some big offers from Russian clubs and Arsene doesn’t seem to be interested in the young Frenchman.

One young and tough midfielder that does seem to have caught Wenger’s eye, however, is Victor Wanyama – Celtic’s ace holding midfielder. The Kenyan has been a force to be reckoned with in this season’s Scottish Premier League and has had a profound influence in the Champions League, where his all action performance had Barcelona running scared.

He’s been compared to Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote – a tenacious talent who loves to stick his foot in, impose himself and pick up a few yellow cards.

The Independent claim that his asking price has no risen above £10m, but also note that he has relatively low wages, something which could be rather appealing to Arsene Wenger.

He’d certainly be a welcome relief from the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Abou Diaby, who often gamble around the pitch giving the ball away. An Arsenal player who is actually capable of winning the ball back would be a sight to behold.

He can also chip in in other ways. Despite his defensive discipline, the 21-year-old has already scored 7 times in 32 appearances this season. He looks to be blossoming into a good all-rounder and though he still has plenty of developing to do, would be a good fit at the Emirates.

Arsenal need a signing of his ilk. He can be the platform that allows them to play their best football – a sight we haven’t seen for some time now.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be chasing Victor Wanyama?

You obviously didn’t see Aaron Ramsey last night, for once playing in his favoured central position, giving a fantastic display as a holding midfielder and helping Arsenal play some very beautiful football. You should really try to keep up to date.

Wenger will sit on his hands and miss more good players.
Villa, M’Villa and M’Winga would transform the team in attack, midfield and defense and cost less than 30 million.
    WTF are we waiting for???
