Tottenham have already secured one of the best deals of the January transfer window by convincing Lewis Holtby to join them in the summer, but they could be about to make it better by convincing his club to let him join them sooner.

The North London side has already agreed a pre-contract deal with Holtby, to bring him to White Hart Lane on a free transfer when his current Schalke 04 deal ends in the summer.

But now Tottenham are thought to be willing to offer ‘close to £1m’ to bring this deal forward and make Holtby a Spurs player before the January transfer window slams shut. (Source: The Mirror).

This urgency is not without good reason. Their big Brazilian midfielder, Sandro is out for the rest of the season after having to undergo knee surgery.

Whilst Holtby and Sandro are two rather different players, the German will provide Andre Villas-Boas with another option in midfield and may help to give Spurs more of a goal threat.

He’s the kind of player who’s capable of dominating other midfields on his day and is going to be an excellent addition for this Tottenham side – whenever he arrives.

Unfortunately, Schalke’s general manager Horst Heldt doesn’t seem to be playing ball: “Tottenham have made an offer, which was not acceptable, therefore it was rejected”. This strikes me as unfortunate. Lewis Holtby could be just what Spurs need to secure a fourth place finish.

He has a fantastic attitude. He has told Schalke fans: “I am not going to just p*** off without busting my a** for the team.” Charming! But he’s more than backed up these claims. During Schalke’s recent 5-4 victory against Hannover, Holtby scored and set-up two other goals.

He’s an all-action midfielder, who passes the ball about extremely nicely, can split defenses and get forward and support the attack. There may be some concerns about whether he’ll be able to cope with the physicality of the Premier League, but he’s more than capable of dealing with this difficulty within the Bundesliga. With Scott Parker protecting him, he should be perfectly fine.

I can’t wait to see him play in the Premier League. If it takes a bit more money on the part of Tottenham to bring the deal forward, I hope they go for it.

What’s your take? Should Tottenham sign Lewis Holtby this January?

As a Spurs fan, I think Schalke are being perfectly reasonable. We’re getting him for free in the summer, so if we want him early, we should pay their asking price (which is only 1.5 million).

C’mon, Levy. Just give them their fair deal.

  • Stu says:

Hell Yeah! We want him now and need him. But Levy is not going to start paying out because we got him for free. I’d like to see Gylfi Siggurdsson get a bit more game time. I’m convinced he’s Spurs material and need to rotate to get the best out of the squad. Holtby would give the team something else but I just want a Striker signed before the Window slams shut. Please Mr Levy please.

    • Mark says:

Push for 2nd if we get them. But we will have no chance of getting any of them in this transfer window. Holtby yes and maybe Diame.

  • Tyler Coys says:

It would be nice to get him in so that he has half a season to get bedded in and gel, this will get him running for next season!

GUYS GUYS GUYS STOP RUNNING AWAY WITH THE OLD IMAGINATION YOU WILL GET THE MEN IN WHITE COATS AFTER YOU ,MR LEVY WILL NOT LET US DOWN HE WILL DO WHAT`S BEST FOR SPURS MY ONLY CONCERN IS BRINGING IN THR RIGHT QUALITY COYS !

  • spurian says:

leave it to levy. END OF! in levy we must trust COYS

  • Grizzly Adams says:

We should defo get him in now, get him used to the team, system, life in London etc, so next season we can have the best from him!

  • ColinSC says:

He has the reputation for hitting the ground running. He is an alternative to Dembele in the middle (which we didn’t have). He scores goals and that 1.6 million is great value for money as he would be worth less than Ade’s wage bill for a couple of months. Trouble with this messing about may make him feel devalued as a player. From what I have read he covers most mid areas and is the perfect AVB player as he can be put anywhere and accommodate the required tactics.
