Why this £14m man may be Manchester United’s perfect signing:

With Manchester United nestled so snugly at the top of the Premier League, there’s always the risk that complacency may begin to kick in.

And at this point, that’s surely what it would take for Manchester City to beat their rivals to the title.

The truth of the matter is, this Manchester United team is not perfect. There are weaknesses. Whilst the attacking line-up would be hard to improve (though I’m sure Sir Alex Ferguson will try his best soon enough), the midfield and defense could use a couple of additions.

The key area that needs looking at, however, must surely be the goalkeeping position.

I feel a little sorry for David De Gea, who arrived at Old Trafford at a young age, with £20m’s worth of pressure on his shoulder. You can’t blame him for being nervy. It’s easy to see why he’s been unable to perform to his best.

He’s been much criticized when he has made mistakes and Fergie has been more than willing to rotate his keepers when necessary.

This is compounded by the fact that the young Spaniard doesn’t seem capable of adequately commanding his area. United fans are used to Edwin Van Der Sar, but De Gea just isn’t at that level (not yet, anyway).

There have been plenty of rumours that De Gea may well return to La Liga this summer, with Real Madrid thought to be keeping tabs on him. At this stage, that may be the best thing for both United and the player himself.

Naturally, he’ll need to be replaced and should this story in the Daily Mail be true, they’ve already found the perfect candidate: Uruguay international, Fernando Muslera.

Forget Pepe Reina, forget Asmir Begovic, Muslera is the real deal! Muslera, who currently plies his trade with Galatasaray won the Turkish League’s ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ award last season creating a new record for the number of clean sheets in a single season (19).

You may also remember Muslera saving a penalty from Carlos Tevez, to take Uruguay through  to the semi-final of the 2011 Copa America – a competition they would go on to win.

The Mail claim that a £14m offer has been made, though no formal negotiations have begun. That seems like a lot of money for a goalkeeper, but they don’t seem to come cheap nowadays.

But given United’s current situation, that may be the smarted £14m they spend in the next couple of years.

What’s your take? Would Fernando Muslera be a good replacement for David De Gea?
