The £13m striker that Newcastle desperately need?

Darren Bent’s goal-scoring record more or less speaks for itself. At Charlton Athletic he scored 37 goals in 79 appearances. At Tottenham, he proved that he was no flash in the pan by slotting home 25 times in 79 games. He improved on this at Sunderland where he scored 36 goals in 63 appearances.

Whilst his reputation has suffered at Aston Villa, he has still scored 23 goals in 56 appearances.

I think it’s fair to say that he’s a natural goal-scorer. Whilst he’s a bit of a journeyman, he’s more than capable of leading the attack in many different set-ups and formations.

Naturally, there’s a lot of talk regarding Bent’s future. Despite his awesome goal-scoring record, Paul Lambert doesn’t seem to trust him (does Bent ‘goose’ him a little too often during training sessions?) and hasn’t given him much game time this season.

Yes, Christian Benteke looks like a real talent, but surely there is a place in this lackluster Villa side for a player with the experience and goal-scoring form of Darren Bent?

That’s Lambert’s axe to grind, but I think he’s making a mistake by sending him out into the cold. Villa spent a lot of money on him back in 2011 and Lambert’s actions are chipping away from Bent’s potential re-sale value.

Indeed, the IB Times suggest that Newcastle are looking to wrap up a £13m deal for the Villa striker. If this is true, Villa would be making a big loss on the striker. Benteke may have what it takes to replace him, but the club’s financial power would be affected significantly.

Newcastle are clearly in desperate need for another striker. Papiss Demba Cisse has not maintained his form from last season, Demba Ba flew the coup and ended up at Chelsea, whilst transfer target Loic Remy opted to join cash-rich QPR (big surprise).

Targetting Darren Bent may be a win-win for both the player and the club. Newcastle would get a proven goal-scorer at a bargain price and Darren Bent would get the opportunity to start afresh, prove himself once more and stick his middle finger up at Paul Lambert.

Indeed, the only party that looks set to lose out should this deal go ahead, is Aston Villa. Given than Newcastle are currently locked into a relegation battle with Lambert’s boys, I’m sure they’d get over this fairly quickly.

What’s your take? Should Alan Pardew look to wrap up a deal for Darren Bent?

No Brainer……If he is available within the budget he will add goals to the group.

  • Kebab Meat says:

Not going to happen… Ashley will not fork out £13m for him as he doesn’t fit within his policy of young players. The price tag is also too much.

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

to old and theres better targets out there at that price

Surely, this situation is now not about age or value for money, but All about survival. This guy will get the goals we need to stay up and who knows whot will happen next season. A good deal for me.

Think Bent is being wasted regardless of what goes on behind the scenes his goal scoring record is fantastic, Benteke agreed an amazing signing but realistically how long will a player of that quality stick around for before huge bids come in and he’s off, think PL is making a bit of a mistake casting him out to the shadows as he’s a striker you definately want in the majority of premier league teams
